Space beyond borders… On earth everything and everyone is placed into a box, a territory, a geographical location with borders, everyone is building up walls. Everyone is closing themselves off to ideas because of where and when and how they were born. In 1969 the earth stood still for a moment as one. Because for the first time in human history man walked on the moon, one small step for man one giant leap for mankind. And with that sentiment exactly the world changed. But as other forms of technology advanced, space technologies went on behind the scenes, slowly developing the technology needed for space travel in 2009 the International Space Station took flight. Once again changing the ideas that surrounded the human myth and the mysteries of the universe.
In 2001, the first public space flight was taken, but space tourism was not really opened until 2017 when it became cheaper than ever to go to space, thus reducing the cost of space flight.
In 2020, NASA pulled out their funding on the International Space Station and many that was the end of the space program, but this was a ploy to open up funding for the first orbital colony or space condos.
In 2033, space condos were being popularized and offered as an extravagant vacation spot but the truth of it was that artificial gravity had not yet been invented and staying in the condos for longer than a few months was bad for the heath of those on board, including but not limited to, confused immune system where the immune system changes and dormant viruses in the human body can reactivate.
Lungs and Dust where fine particles of dust are inhaled and can harm the heart and lungs. Hearing loss, either substantial, temporary, or outright permanent was a serious threat. Other kinds of problems associated with spending too long in space were sleeping, cardiac, and vision problems.
In 2069, exactly 100 years after the first moon walk, space colonies with now-updated artificial gravity opened up for end living. The first crew of live-in staff on the colony one contained International Space Program Astronauts from around the world. Opening up this colony broke down the borders and brought together the human race, or that was the idea.
World Space Organization—Today marks the 100-year Anniversary of the lunar landing in 1969 and as a commemoration of that Colony One AKA Unity is opening its doors today. To the first people to colonize space, what an extraordinary day for us all.
July 20, 2069
The radio played in the background as Sandra was staring out the window at the city, silent and ominous like a graveyard. In the distance, black and grey smoke filled the air from the burning of dead bodies and was carried over many miles towards her on the wind. Sandra could smell the putrid and sickly sweet smell of the dead. She closed her eyes as her stomach turned over in disgust.
The man on the radio was saying, What people are now calling ‘the virus’ has speed across the world in a pandemic that is wiping out thousands of people worldwide. The origins of the virus are still unknown and there is still no cure for it. Symptoms include fever and lightheaded, weak headache, stiff and sore body and other flu-like symptoms. The dead are being burned today, hoping this will kill any lasting virus and stop it from spreading farther. But so far the quarantines have done a wonderful job of stopping further speeding of the virus.
She closed her eyes and turned away as the radio crew started talking about the Unity project, which would leave earth in only a few scant hours. Sandra’s father would not be joining her on the mission, because of the virus, not that he himself was sick but rather because they needed him to take care of affairs on earth.
One radio personality, a soft female who was known for her banter was saying, So, wait, is that still happening
The reply by a dark husky voice, Well yeah. They can’t just push it back because of this. There is some argument that it’s actually better they go ahead with it.
The atmosphere in the radio studio was palatable even across the void which they carried towards her, as she listened to them back and forth and back and forth like a tennis match.
I think the next thing will happen. You know, the population has decreased by nearly 10% and, though it’s slowing down, still more people are dying,
said the female voice. She sounded on edge, as if she might start crying at any moment.
Scientists now say that up to 20% of the world’s population was infected, and if 50% of those are dead already with a steady increase, soon enough all 20% will be dead won’t they?
said the man, all too was disturbed him this, as everyone should have been. He seemed to change the subject, feeling the heaviness of the conversation, the foreboding of death at their doorstep.
You guys know about Dr Jones, right?
he said and Sandra peeked at this turning towards the radio as if by seeing where the noise was coming from she could hear and understand the words better.
The female voice spoke up. Yeah, Dr Jones, who is friends with Prime Minister Caraway. She was on the media during the first outbreak.
She was clarifying this for everyone. Sandra waited to hear what they were going to say about her mother.
With bated breath, she listened as the masculine voice said, Yeah, her, well it turns out Dr. Jones has two PhDs, one in engineering and astrophysics. Well she is sick, obviously. But she seems to be okay in the hospital.
She has a prodigious daughter or something, right?
interjected the female voice brightly, as if talking about Sandra was a light break in the situation’s dimness.
Yeah, Dr. Sandra Jones, she’s 18 and has a doctorate in Planetary Biology and a Master's in Engineering!
the male voice was excited now. He sounded as if he might burst to say more.
"Wow, when I was 18 I was drunk every Friday
