The Murder investigation - Serenity Marie

the Murder investigation

Across the Border

B oss is asking for you, Tiffany said with a glare as she passed my table, flipping hair over her ear with an annoyed expression.

I chuckled at her antics, realizing that I must have gotten another case that she probably wanted. Hearing my chuckle, she turned around to send me another glare and huffed with even more annoyance when I told her to stop being a sore loser. I couldn’t help but laugh as I closed the file, heading to my boss’s office to see what he had in store."

I worked at a private investigation company, and Tiffany and I were the best they had, which was why we were always competing for missions. We enjoyed the thrill that came along with chasing clues, the adrenaline coursing through our bodies as we moved from one place to another, and especially the feeling of inner satisfaction when we pieced all the puzzle pieces together and showed everyone the final picture. It was like finishing one of those one thousand-piece puzzles that everyone had but just assumed it was undoable, but then they start it one day and—voila, the picture is crystal clear. The investigation wasn’t as easy as a puzzle though because you had to find the pieces before putting them together, but nevertheless, it was still incredibly fun.

I knocked at the door, waiting for my boss to give me the green signal. As soon as I heard him say come in, I walked in, straightening my shirt and tie, and took a seat. Gareth was nice, as friendly as a boss can be, but when it came to business, he wouldn't stand for any stupid mistakes.

Trying to start a conversation, I chucked, So, I’m guessing Tiffany wanted this case.

Gareth nodded his head before clearing his throat, Yes and she was a perfect choice. He gave me a look that said, 'don't be cocky.' I raised my hands in defense, trying to play along. But I need to send you to a remote area for this investigation, and it’s not safe for enough for a woman. As much as I love her work, I love her even more as a daughter, and her safety is my priority.

I understood what Gareth was trying to say. Honestly, I would never underestimate Tiffany because I knew how smart she was and was probably a better investigator than me. The few cases that we had worked on together, she would notice the small details that I would mostly ignore, and that’s why I enjoyed having her as a partner. We made up a good team, and she was a good friend, but we enjoyed the banter and the competition, and everyone knew it. Pouting at Gareth though, I tried to lighten the mood, What about my safety?

Gareth rolled his eyes at me, knowing that I was just playing and said, Okay, I’ll call someone else and give the case to them since you’re not ready to wear your big boy panties yet.

I immediately dropped my act and narrowed my eyes, No, you would not. Brief me about the case, and when do I leave?

Gareth let out a loud laugh at my reaction and shook his head with a smile on his face, whispering Knew it under his breath before bringing out a file and placing it in front of me. I reached for the file and started flipping through it, noting its content and putting it in my lap to read it later.

Gareth began the briefing, The murder happened on the outskirts of Mexico, so you’ll have to go there for the investigation. The details of the victim and his family are in the file, it also has a number that you can call on if you need any more information, but make sure you don't blow your cover this time, we have no idea who we are dealing with.

I replied in fake outcry, It was one time.

Gareth stood up, and I followed. Extending his hand toward me, I knew it was the time to leave, and I shook his hand before turning around to leave the room when Gareth called for me. I turned back, and he gave me a small smile with a Take care of yourself and be safe. I smiled back at him and left feeling very emotional. Gareth had always taken care of us like his children, and I owed everything to that man for believing in me. I headed to my desk and sat down, opening the file so I could read through it. Turns out, Sam was murdered in his house around 10 p.m., after he got home from work. The murderer had hit him on the head countless times until he died. The family did not doubt anyone since Sam did not have any sort of bad blood with anyone. I was in the middle of the file when I felt someone leaning on my desk, looking up, I saw Tiffany. She was still glaring at me. I leaned back in my seat with a smirk.

Stop looking so smug. She rolled her eyes and motioned to the file, What you got there?

I started going through it again, It's a Latino family, and so far, everyone looks pretty normal and average. Their youngest brother was murdered, and, well, that's all I know right now.

She sighed, So, when do you leave? she asked before making herself comfortable on the desk, sitting on it.

Tomorrow, I replied, closing the file to look at her. I gave her a small smile, and she returned it. I didn’t understand why she was sad. We had always competed for cases, but neither of us were anything but a sore loser. No matter who won, we would be happy for the other.

Hey, are you okay? I asked, straightening up to look at her seriously.

Yeah, I’m fine, she replied, but sighed as I gave her a look that said that she couldn’t bluff with me. Taking a deep breath, she added, "It’s nothing, but I did my research, and the area is
