In The Dark - Kyle Livermore
One
Sinister growls could be heard from the abandoned train station, this was the beginning of the night time, at this time everybody fled into their houses, because they were afraid, afraid of the evil inside the train station, it had taken over everybody’s lives, nobody could live in peace anymore, the suicide rate had trebled, the population rate had rapidly decreased, the world was full of terror, all caused by the darkness that had filled the land, abandoned buildings had been taken over, supermarkets had been attacked, people inhumanely murdered, and in the morning they would be found hanging from the door, but this only seemed to happen after the sun goes down, and this had been quickly worked out, but they were still there, hiding away in the darkest corners, in the blackest of tunnels, in the basements of empty houses. The world was in terror, and it seemed that it couldn’t be stopped, this was how it was now.
A few doors down from the train station was a small house, home to 18-year-old Jaxson Dawn, who was eyeing up the train station where the growls were emitting from through his window, an older woman walked in, and put his arms around Jaxson’s shoulders, and then she said with a soft voice ‘better close your curtains, you don’t want them to see you.’ Jaxson didn’t say anything, he just nodded, before slowly drawing his jet-black curtains, and then he sighed. ‘Mum, I’ve never really understood what they are. The evil behind those doors, they’ve ruined our lives, we can’t live in happiness anymore.’ The woman, Jaxson’s mum, didn’t respond, she just left Jaxson’s room, and her footsteps could be heard on the stairs, as she began to go downstairs, and that’s when it started. They had left the train station, their growls were even louder than before, they were hunting, they were looking for those brave enough to leave their homes, so they could devour their entire beings.
All through the night, Jaxson lay in his bed, the growls were just getting louder and angrier, everybody knew not to leave their homes anymore, so they weren’t eating, but they were slowly getting smarter, there had been reports of people found in their homes, after the monsters had invaded their homes, but nothing was being done about it, armies had been dispatched, and they had been brutally murdered, and this was happening in every single city all around the world, they had come from nowhere. Jaxson opened his diary and opened it to the first entry, the day after the night it had all begun:
4th September 2019
I have no idea what is happening, but I thought it would be a good idea to start a diary, as I don’t know how long this is going to carry on for,
Millions of people were killed overnight, they’ve closed everything, schools have been invaded, train stations have been taken over, in my town alone, 1000s of dead bodies were discovered, their bodies gruesomely destroyed, everybody is already beginning to panic, they’ve sent out a group of army soldiers to explore the abandoned train station, this was where a blood trail was found leading to, it has been 4 hours and there has been nothing from them, my mum is in hysterics, my dad works night shifts at our local supermarket, which was one of the buildings invaded, his body hasn’t been found but we can’t get hold of him, he isn’t answering his phone or replying to his messages.
I’m just hoping this is only a one-night ordeal,
Jaxson
Jaxson read his last sentence over and over, it hadn’t been a one-night ordeal, it had lasted for 6 months, and their dad had been killed on the first night, his body had been located in a freezer, his organs had been ripped out, and most likely eaten, which ultimately confirmed that whatever was doing this, it wasn’t human, and there were also several of them. Jaxson looked at his window, the growls still emanating around the city of Oxford, it had once been a colourful, powerful city, everyone used to be so happy here, but now that was over. Jaxson slowly walked downstairs, his mum was still down there, she was eerily quiet, and Jaxson approached her, she was crying, her long blonde hair was a mess, her makeup was smudged, therefore Jaxson sat down next to her on their bright red settee, and he put his arm comfortingly around her, and he whispered ‘I love you mum.’ As he did so, there was a knock on the door, and Jaxson’s mum looked up, she looked terrified, and then she snapped at Jaxson ‘Cellar. NOW!’ Jaxson ran back up the stairs, and he pulled the door to the cellar down, and climbed up the stairs, his mum didn’t follow suit though, she pushed the door closed behind Jaxson, and he screamed, before turning the cellar light on, it was a gloomy room, but it was filled with food, they had managed to stock up a lot of food, more than most of the town. Jaxson tried to listen to what was happening, he could hear… talking?
After a few minutes, Jaxson opened the door to the cellar and he climbed back down the cellar stairs, and he went to the ground floor. His mum was talking to someone, and they were human. ‘Is this him Lizzy?’ The man said, with a tone of curiosity. Lizzy just nodded, and Jaxson continued to glare at the man. ‘Who are you? How did you move around at night?’ Jaxson was full of questions, unsure of the man’s identity. ‘Relax Jaxson. All will be explained in due course. But as to who I am, for now you will just know me as Rex. I am the leader of the VER.’ Jaxson just raised his eyebrows, and Rex continued. ‘The VER is a newly created association, it stands for Vermin Elimination Rangers. Our aim is to purge the evil that is terrorizing and destroying our once beautiful planet.’ Jaxson then said, still confused, ‘that doesn’t explain how you got here. It is common fact that anybody who goes outside gets killed. They devour everything they see that moves.’ Rex just laughed, and then he winked at Lizzy. ‘That’s enough questions for now. Lizzy I will be in contact soon. Hopefully a decision has been made by then.’ Rex then left without saying another word, and as soon as the door closed, Jaxson just glared at Lizzy, and she just said ‘off to bed you. It’s late.’ Jaxson was full of protests, but Lizzy wasn’t having any of it. ‘Jaxson, I can’t explain anything, I don’t understand it myself. Now, go to bed!’
The next morning, Jaxson and Lizzy went outside to review the damage that had been done the previous night, there were blood trails everywhere, but the train station was quiet, this was normal during the day, it was as if nothing was happening. Jaxson went downstairs, Lizzy wasn’t yet out of bed, but Jaxson went into the cellar, and he grabbed himself a tin of tomato soup, went back to the kitchen, and he heated it up, as he did so, Lizzy came downstairs, and asked the question that is asked every morning. ‘What’s it like out there?’ Jaxson didn’t respond at first, as he had a mouthful of tomato soup, but when he was finished, he replied ‘it’s pretty standard. Blood everywhere, might be worth looking yourself, seeing if you spot anything out of the ordinary.’ Lizzy nodded, and then went outside to evaluate the mess the monsters had left it in, instantly she spotted something different, and she shouted, ‘hey Jaxson come here.’ Jaxson ran to her, and then Lizzy pointed to the train station. ‘There is something different, the door to the train station is open, the boarding has been removed, and the lights have come back on, which might mean that something different happened last night.’ Jaxson realised that Lizzy was right, normally the train station was boarded up and dark, but the front door was wide open, and the main foyer of the train station was in plain view, in light, and it looked empty, it was a mess, but it was empty. Lizzy stepped outside, and then she said, ‘I’m just going to
