Born in The Netherlands, we went to live in London, England, when I was eighteen.BFA – Art History, Major. Interior Design, Minor.Moved to Montreal, Canada. (I figured I might as well be paid for being fluent in French). Married Arnold Hofman, a truly fabulous man. Owned and operated an art gallery for twelve years. Widowed ten years ago. Became friends with Nina Bruhns, who urged me to write.I did as I was told, and in the next five years I wrote two dozen books. I figured that’s what it would take to learn to write. And I was wrong!Rose Brungard took pity on me and gave unstintingly of her own expertise, sending long teaching e-mails, which helped me a lot.I also owe my grateful thanks to Thea Devine, who taught me to play “What If” when the writing isn’t going well. And more recently, I have been given generous help, encouragement and advice by Jennifer Mueller, a wonderful writer, who also provided the stunning cover art for all my books published by Romance At Heart. I owe you all so much.Sincerely,Kate Hofman

    New York, November

David MacFarlane, the fabled Broadway producer, was giving a late dinner party in a justly famous restaurant. The reason—to celebrate the homecoming of his friend, Jason Hawk, from a voluntary tour of duty in Afghanistan. David had arranged the round table in such a way that he had Jason, the handsome, internationally renowned playwright—and recent war correspondent—to his right. He’d also made sure that Jason’s beautiful wife, Andrea, was seated on Jason’s other side. While Jason was in Kandahar, Afghanistan, sending his in-depth stories and observations to the New York Times and certain respected magazines, Andrea had been lonely, and her own work as an erotic romance writer seemed irrelevant and frivolous. Jason, always sensitive to nuances, had guessed as much, and intended to make Andrea realize her work was as important in its own way as the book he was planning to write, based on situations he had encountered in the war zone. Glancing to Andrea’s other side, Jason nodded to the charming, slightly older man next to her. But Jason’s eyes returned, irresistibly, to Andrea. Ah, how he had missed her.

He smiled when he thought of her astonishment, when he shoved his stellar career as a playwright on a back burner, to go to Afghanistan and report on the Taliban—how ordinary people managed to survive—and how the fighting was affecting the Afghanis as well as our troops.

Now, he would write a play based on his experiences during his sojourn in Afghanistan. But first, he would take Andrea on a second honeymoon.

He became aware of the man on Andrea’s other side—name of Dex Something—who was exhausting himself in charming remarks aimed at monopolizing her—his wife… Jason smiled a little grimly to himself. Once they were on their honeymoon, he would lavish his attentions on her, make her realize how much he had missed her—how much he loved her. He shrugged one shoulder lightly. She’d probably try to make him promise never to leave her again. One slim, dark brow lifted slightly. Right now he was more than ready to promise her that.

When they were all seated, Andrea’s neighbour said quietly to her, "I don’t for a moment suppose you took
