The Things We Should Have Known Before Disappearing
Before the lights all went dark, back when I could still charge my phone, I looked over the texts from her pretty frequently. That was before I knew what was happening. It was before any of us knew what was happening.
FYI, I am here.
I said.
Me too.
She responded. Where’r u at?
In the lobby. I put our name in.
Uhm wait.
she wrote back. I think one of us is confused. I thought we decided on the Italian place on Main Street.
We did. That’s where I am.
I am standing right here by the desk. You’re not here.
I was standing by the desk. Me.
I tried to call her. It didn’t even go to voicemail. It rang once or twice. Then it stopped ringing. I texted her again. There was no delay, this time. No waiting for her to text back. The message that came back to me was an automated one.
The phone you are texting is no longer in service.
It was supposed to be our third date. I was kind-of falling in love. I had thought she was the one. As I stood there, I started to think it was a trick or a joke or something. Until then, her sense of humor had seemed quirky. This? This was just mean. And also weird.
A harried waitress came up to me. "I am sorry. Three of the wait staff haven’t made it in yet. Maybe there’s like a crash
