About this ebook

Why shoot a revolver when a modern semi-automatic carries more rounds, reloads faster, is flatter and slimmer, and is no more costly? Revolvers are no-problem guns. Because it has a relatively straightforward design, a revolver is very reliable. A semiautomatic is sensitive to cartridges, and stories about jammed actions because of insufficiently powerful rounds are numerous. Revolvers do not jam. If a revolver misfires or a case is underpowered, the shooter simply pulls the trigger again. The complexity of a semi-auto’s mechanics compared to a revolver gives the revolver an edge in durability. A revolver can take a great deal of punishment and still shoot a tight group. The final point in favor of revolvers is their ability to accept powerful loads. No semiautos can withstand the power of loads such as .454 Casull or .475 Linebaugh. In short, revolvers still rock!

Rick Sapp

Born near Chicago, Rick Sapp grew up on Amelia Island, Florida. His unusual heritage— on one side a long line of southern farmers, shrimp boat captains and rebels, and on the other, a legacy of northern coal miners, gangsters and union organizers—gave him a restless spirit and an inquisitive mind. After three years at the U.S. Air Force Academy he joined the army as a paratrooper and subsequently worked as an intelligence officer in Europe. He completed his PhD. in cultural anthropology at the University of Florida, conducting field work with the National Institute of Mental Health (St. Elizabeth Hospital) in Washington, DC, and in the Great Bend of the Suwannee River, Florida. Rick owned a Media Consulting firm until 9/11 and soon thereafter began freelancing full-time. Rick has since authored (or coauthored) 30 books about camping, bicycle touring, urban redevelopment, history, political cartoons, and outdoor activities. A prolific freelance writer since 1980, his resume includes hundreds, perhaps a thousand, nonfiction articles, creative nonfiction, and short fiction stories, and even poetry. Rick lives in Florida.

    REVOLVERS

The days when a town constable carried a simple cudgel and could unceremoniously toss a man or woman into the stocks are long gone in America. Colonial America enjoyed relatively little crime, with most crimes being offenses against established custom rather than murder or theft, so a sheriff could get away with only carrying a stick to bash the occasional stubborn head.

A peace officer in the budding United States was rarely confronted by a violent or unpredictable person, but this began to change as wealth aggregated and cities grew. Officers could carry a flintlock pistol, but it was a one-shot weapon, certainly deadly enough, but if additional firepower was needed, he of necessity gathered a posse.
