THERE'S a wide range of propellant powders available for reloaders to choose from. But how do you choose the one that's most suitable for your specific load requirements? The answer to that question is simple. Just consult several current editions of the major component suppliers loading manuals and choose recipes to test for the specific cartridge and bullet type you want to load.
If AR2209 delivered satisfactory ballistics and performance in your .243 Win. and .30-06, probably you would like to use it in your new .280 Ackley Improved. First check the loading manuals to verify it's safe choice and give it a try. As an aside: You won't be disappointed.
However, if you've just acquired a .44 Magnum lever-action, your perfectly suited rifle propellant is absolutely not going to work in this magnum handgun cartridge. For this application you'll need to choose a powder like Lil Gun, AR2205, or Alliant 2400 that exhibits a relatively much faster burning rate. Straight-sided rifle cartridges like the .444 Marlin and.458 Win. Mag. also perform best with powders which are faster burning than those used in bottleneck cases of similar capacity.
