A Flower That Will Never Die
Synopsis: A Flower That Will Never Die is about a woman who works in a florist’s shop, hates busy days like Valentine’s Day, & reluctantly agrees to go out with her female boss for a drink after their shop finally closes.
Lila woke up with a groan. Most days, she woke up with a smile — or, barring that, excitement over what the coming day would bring.
However, not today. Never today.
For today was Valentine’s Day. Her most hated of all days.
Lila cracked one eye open and tried to assess the weather from her tiny window, located across the room. It always looked gray because of the taller buildings surrounding her apartment, but she could discern some sort of precipitation falling. When Lila cracked her other eye open, she realized it was snowing.
Great. Crappy winter weather for the crappiest day of the year.
Lila worked at a small florist, but their orders quadrupled for today. She knew that she should get going, show up early to help her boss with the rush that was sure to start, but another part of her wanted to simply stay in bed. Stay in bed all day. That seemed to be an effective defense against Valentine’s Day.
She grabbed her phone and squinted at the too-bright display as she punched in her the florist’s number.
Yes!
the person on the other end of the line barked.
Lila jumped, flinching away from the phone.
Um, Jo? This is Lila.
Oh, Lila, I’m sorry,
Jo said, sounding exhausted and harried even though it was only eight in the morning. When are you coming?
That’s actually why I’m calling,
Lila said, biting her lip. She hated lying, especially to someone as good as Jo, but she also couldn’t stand to be out there in the thick of romance and couples and lovey-dovey New Yorkers. Ugh. I’ve woken up pretty sick, Jo.
Oh no, oh no, oh no,
Jo chanted, obviously dismayed. What is it? A cold? Strep throat? The flu? The poops? I need you, Lila!
Lila pressed her face into her pillow, feeling like a shithead. Of course, Jo needed her. This was the busiest day
