Chapter 1
Things never worked out for Noelle. That was a fact. Now a failed engagement was on her list of failures.
I thought you were out with Lucas tonight,
Bailey said.
Noelle whimpered. It’s over, Bailey.
She rubbed the heel of her palm against her chest. She didn’t want to disturb Bailey at the studio, but she needed to hear her best friend’s voice.
Her friend choked. What?
I called off my engagement.
Why?
Noelle shook her head. I’d rather not talk about it. Not now.
Her phone beeped with an incoming call. She knew it was Lucas. Kicking off her heels, she walked from her bedroom to her bathroom. She stared at her shower shelf, holding her body washes and shampoos. When she faced the mirror, she noticed her red eyes. How did things get this far?
She sniffled. Noelle grabbed some tissue and blew her nose. Then she sat on her fluffy floor rug, inhaling the air freshener that spritzed every thirty minutes.
You haven’t told your Aunt Fran have you?
Bailey asked.
Noelle groaned.
I guess not,
Bailey said.
I can’t deal with her either.
Noelle sniffled once again.
I know you don’t want to talk about it, but do you at least think you made the right decision?
Noelle slumped against the wall. That was the problem. She didn’t know what to do. How could she turn down a man who gave her everything? Lucas was great, but something was missing. Love shouldn’t have felt like... Noelle rubbed at her head. How was she supposed to feel?
"I don’t know, but I can’t say I do until I know for sure," she said.
I wish I was there. It sounds like you need a hug.
Noelle gave a faint smile. I could.
We should be home tonight,
Bailey said.
How did the new song turn out?
Noelle asked. Perhaps she needed a change of subject.
Awesome. Jackson is super talented. He thinks I can help with the lyrics with another song he and Tommy are working on, but I’ll stick to the vocals.
Tommy? Noelle recalled meeting him at Infinity Signs’ last live performance. He had a nice smile. Was there a warm squeeze at the end of his handshake when they met? Noelle shook off the notion. That’s good.
Let me know when you’re ready to talk,
Bailey said.
I will. I’ll see you when you get back. Bridge Point’s not the same without my best friend.
The studio’s only forty-five minutes away,
Bailey said.
Not the same.
You could come on the road with us.
You booked a tour?
Noelle asked.
Not yet, but our manager is booking us out for the next few weeks. It’s pre-release work before our album comes out. You can come and do my makeup.
You're great with your own makeup,
Noelle said.
True, but I learned my best tricks from you. Besides, you can use the time to clear your head. I'm sure my Mom wouldn't mind you taking a vacation.
Me on the road with you and three other men. I don't think so, besides you'll be so wrapped up in Jackson on your off time, I'll spend the whole time reading and listening to NF.
Noelle laughed.
Bailey giggled. Fine, stay in Bridge Point. I’ll be home soon.
Tell Jackson I said hi,
Noelle said. With that, she hung up. The corners of her mouth quirked up. She was proud of Bailey pursuing her dream and finding romance with Jackson.
Noelle's body jerked at her phone ringing again. Lucas. She stared at his picture on her screen. His smoldering sea-blue eyes undid her. But why didn’t the thought of spending the rest of her life with him excite her? She declined the call. Slipping into a hot bath was what she needed at the moment.
Chapter 2
The buzz of her nail drill filled Noelle’s ears. Work was the best medicine since she didn’t have to think about her love life. She inhaled the herbal, floral, and fruity shampoos in Ms. Helen's salon. Glancing around the room, the crowd was decent. Then Lucas came to her mind.
Was it over? She sighed and continued her work on Mrs. Bellamy’s nails. The activities director for Bridge Point loved bringing nail design ideas she’d found on Pinterest.
Do you think Bailey’s band will perform for our winter ball?
Mrs. Bellamy asked.
Noelle paused and adjusted in her padded chair. Bridge Point threw a winter ball every year as the last celebration of winter before welcoming spring. As the years passed, it grew bigger with band performances and upgraded to a black-tie event. They have a manager now. I think if you get in contact with him, it might work.
I can’t believe it. When I saw the YouTube video, it floored me to see Bailey on stage!
Me too.
Her friend owned the stage every time she opened her mouth. Noelle finished buffing Mrs. Bellamy’s nails. Ever since Bailey signed a record deal, it had Noelle wondering. Nothing wrong with being a nail technician, but why did it make her stomach tense sometimes?
She dusted off Mrs. Bellamy’s hands. You’re finished.
Her favorite client inspected her work. Amazing every time. I tried doing my own but I’ve had my fill of YouTube tutorials.
Noelle laughed. She checked the time as the bell dinged over the entryway. Aunt Fran. On time wherever she went. Though she preferred her full name, Francesca, Noelle always called her Aunt Fran. Mostly to get under the woman’s skin.
Noelle focused her eyes on her aunt who chit-chatted with Bailey’s mother. Her aunt rarely did small talk, but she was civil to people. Noelle got the brunt of her attitude. She’d been dealing with it for years.
Aunt Fran patted Ms. Helen’s arm and walked over to Noelle’s station. I see you’re ready for me.
Noelle forced a smile. Sure.
Her aunt raised an eyebrow. Don’t do that. I just got here.
"And I’m so glad to see you."
Judging by Aunt Fran’s eyes narrowing, she didn’t approve of her sarcasm. "Here I am trying to support you and this is the treatment I
