    DWELLING PLACE?

    He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.

    HAVE YOU EVER BEEN inside a cabin with a big roaring fire in the fireplace, enjoying the wonderful feeling of safety and security as you watch a storm going on outside? It is a warm, wonderful sensation, knowing you are being sheltered and protected from the storm. That is what Psalm 91 is all about—shelter.

    For men and women serving in the Armed Forces, shelter takes on a whole new meaning. Lieutenant Carey H. Cash has been a battalion chaplain to infantry marines. He was recently chaplain to the president at Camp David. In Operation Iraqi Freedom, his unit was the first ground combat force to cross the border into Iraq. In his book, A Table in the Presence, he relates the stories from the men with whom he was privileged to serve. In one of these stories, he relates their experiences—as well as their wonder and amazement at what God had brought them through. Each of them had a story to tell of the way God had supernaturally sheltered them from harm in those early days of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

    Lieutenant Cash writes: "Early on April 12, as I made my way around Saddam’s palace grounds, I felt compelled to keep talking to the men and listening to their stories. I sensed in them a deep need, even a compulsion, to articulate their wonder and amazement at what God had brought them through. And this wasn’t true of only a handful of Marines. From the youngest private to the oldest veteran, every man seemed to have a story to tell.…Their stories seemed to have one common thread—they all believed they had been in the midst of a modern-day miracle. As they told me what they had seen, their eyes lit up, and their faces glowed.

    "It was clear to me that I wasn’t merely in the company of warriors, but of witnesses.…As they spoke, with tears in their eyes and bullet holes through their clothes, I realized that I too was a witness.
