About this ebook

Jaida is a reluctant vampyr warrior, chained to an oath sworn generations before her birth. Weary and resentful, she tires of battle and yearns for her own autonomy. When she is ordered to eradicate a chapter of the Chosen - a religious cult waging genocide against the vampyr race - she is determined to make this mission her last and take control of her own destiny.

Marc Baker lives a simple life. When his dark good looks and delicious pound cake set Jaida’s heart aflutter, she abandons her mission and throws herself – heart, soul, and appetite – into a relationship with the humble mortal. He offers security and normalcy, concepts with which Jaida is unfamiliar but desperately craves.

Hiding her vampyr identity from Marc, Jaida dares to consider a future with the winsome baker, if she can find a way out of her oath. Yet, when Marc and Jaida discover each other’s secrets, the future they’ve dreamed of shatters.

Can true love overcome a doctrine of hate? Or will utter destruction be the only way for Jaida to break free of her chains?

    Chapter One

    Come to mama, you bastard.

Cloaked in the late-night shadows of the forest, Jaida of Clan Oathkeeper perched high up on a tree limb, waiting for the mounted messenger to pass beneath. She’d been tracking him since he’d left the Oratory of the Chosen in Millsdale. Now, deep in the wilderness and miles away from town, she prepared to strike.

This is it, though. After this, I’m done.

Jaida loathed the Chosen, a zealous religious order bent on destroying vampyr. But two centuries of fighting an uphill battle against their numbers had taken its toll. She’d lost her mate, her immediate family, most of her clan, and any hope of a normal life, in the fight to eliminate them. She desperately wanted to put this chapter of her life behind her and start anew.

I don’t care what Jared has to say about it, either.

    Quiet. I need to concentrate.

Jaida suppressed her inner voice as the steady clop of the horse’s gait grew louder. As the messenger approached, she unsheathed her dagger. Silently, she leaped from her perch and descended on the hooded man. Her momentum knocked him off the horse, and they crashed together to the ground.

The horse trumpeted as it reared up in fear, then galloped off down the path. Jaida easily got the upper hand on the man, rolling over on top of him and holding her dagger against his throat.

Stay silent if you want to live, she hissed in his ear. She pulled him up to his feet, guiding him backward into the protective shadows of the forest thicket.

    Please, take whatever...

Jaida pressed the dagger tight to his neck in warning, sending a thin line of blood trickling down to his chest. The scent of his fear combined with his blood awakened her predatory instincts. It was a shame he had to live even a moment longer, but she needed information. Then, she would feed.

    Silence!

Her captive’s heart raced. He was drenched in sweat. She dragged him several hundred yards back into the forest. The blood pounding in the vein on the side of his neck screamed out to her, causing her own heart to race.

    Soon...

Unsheathe your weapon, slowly, and drop it.

He withdrew a small, silver-tipped dagger, and threw it down. Keeping a tight grip on him, Jaida bent and picked up his weapon, then pushed him onto the ground in front of her. His wide eyes locked with hers as he struggled to sit upright.

You carry a message from the Oratory of the Chosen?

He nodded as he gingerly touched at his wound. His face paled when he caught sight of the blood on his fingertips.

Yes, I’ve just come from the Oratory. His hands shook as he shoved them into his pockets. See here, I have coin...

I’m not a bandit, I don’t want your gold. I just need some questions answered.

I’ll tell you anything, anything at all. He removed his hands from his pockets and wrung them together. Please...don’t hurt me.

Where were you taking your message?

    To the Legate in Arborville.

    Jaida tilted her head.

There’s an Oratory of the Chosen in Arborville?

We have recently established one. His eyes narrowed. Why do you ask these questions?

A sinister smile crept across Jaida’s face, exposing her fangs.

His eyes opened wider still as he gasped in a breath. You’re vampyr! He tried desperately to scramble to his feet, but Jaida was instantly atop her prey. She sank her fangs in to that glorious, throbbing vein, basking in his panicked shrieks of pain.

The last drops of a man’s blood held a special quality, as though one’s life passed through with it into the recipient. The messenger’s energy surged through Jaida’s body as if she’d been struck by lightning. She roared with delight, her mouth and fangs covered in blood, as she drained the messenger dry. Feeding on the man had almost made this mission of Jared’s worth undertaking.

    Almost.

She rifled through the pockets of the dead man’s robes, digging out the sealed document he’d been carrying and slipping it into her bandolier for safekeeping. She also relieved him of his coin. She was no bandit, but he wouldn’t need his gold anymore, and it was a shame to waste. She left the withered husk behind for the forest’s carrion eaters to finish and disappeared into the night.

    *****

The first sliver of sunlight threatened to cross over the horizon as Jaida creaked open the door to her inn room and shuffled in. Jared sat in one of her chairs, reading a book, awaiting her return. The door groaned shut behind her as she fell into the nearest chair. Jared didn’t bother to look up from the book he was reading to acknowledge her return, which was fine with her. Jared was rarely quiet; she took the opportunity to enjoy the silence.

Well? Jared finally asked, after several minutes. Did you locate the messenger?

Yes, I found him. Jaida paused and rolled her shoulders to ease the tension in her neck. She wasn’t about to give Jared what he wanted that easily.

He lowered his book and shifted his gaze to her, a pinched expression on his face.

And...? he asked, with a forced smile.

Her inner tormentor cheered. She loved nothing more than to get under the old vampyr’s skin.

He was delivering a message to the Legate in Arborville.

Jared scratched at the stubble on his chin.

There’s been no talk of an Oratory in Arborville.

Newly established, so he claimed. He had a sealed communication for the Legate in his pocket.

Jared stopped scratching and held out his hand.

Jaida slid the sealed document out from under her bandolier and dropped it into Jared’s waiting hand. He closed his book and set it on the table, then broke the seal and unfolded the document.

Hmm. It would seem the messenger spoke the truth. These orders are addressed to one Legate Thomas in Arborville. His eyes swept across the page. I would never have suspected a cell in Arborville. Now we’ll be able to eliminate them before vampyr lives are lost.

William will no doubt gloat endlessly once he hears that his plan worked.

Holding off the attack in order to intercept the messenger showed a great deal of forethought. He refolded the message and tucked it into his pocket. I have to give him credit for that, at least.

"I can’t believe he and Mara were able to contain their legendary
