Introduction: Hand Sanitizer—What is it? And Why is it Important?

In the broadest sense, hand sanitizer is simply any agent used upon the skin of the hands to decrease the incidence of germs. It’s important to note that decrease is the operative word here, since hand sanitizer is not able to eliminate all germs. This is precisely why even the more powerful bottles of hand sanitizer will advertise that they are only 99.9% effective.

None of the manufacturers will go so far however, as to say that they their products are 100% effective. This is because as well as any given hand sanitizer may work, there is the possibility, no matter how small, that a microbe or two could still slip through. Sanitizer does a great job, but at the end of the day, it is simply not as effective as simple soap and water. If used properly, soap and water should be able to completely wash away all contaminants on the hands.

Having that said however, there are simply instances in which it isn’t convenient—or even possible—to wash your hands.
