Foreword
A chronology is not a biography, but it can play an essential role in researching and understanding someone’s life. At its best a chronology strips away speculation and equivocation, focusing on specific facts, dates, and events. It fills in the details that get overlooked in broader biographical works. These details can provide vital links in a chain of discovery about a person.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was notoriously careless with dates and numbers. Most of his correspondence is undated, and a majority of his biographies lack specific source citations. This makes it dangerous to rely on any single book, or even several books, about his life. Yet constantly searching through the numerous Conan Doyle biographies is tedious work.
Fortunately this Chronology of the Life of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle cites the sources for each listed event. It becomes a sort of master index to Conan Doyle biographical material. For example, the Chronology identifies seven sources that discuss the wounding of Sir Arthur’s son during World War I. Four biographers state that he was wounded on 1 July 1916 and sent back to England. Two others mention the incident without giving a specific date. A final source notes that Conan Doyle received a telegram on 7 July with news of the wounding.
By themselves the Chronology entries provide a valuable summary of biographical reporting. When used as an index to their corresponding sources, they offer a timesaving cross-reference to scholars searching for more information. As such this Chronology could be described as the ultimate Conan Doyle reference work. It is an indispensable resource for anyone doing serious research.

Editor, The Best of Sherlock Holmes (www.bestofsherlock.com)
Note from the author: Randall is probably best known for his website, and for his checklists of Conan Doyle manuscripts and other rarities. He has presented papers about Conan Doyle at Harvard and at the University of Minnesota, written a number of articles for the BSJ, and contributed chapters to the BSI Manuscript Facsimile series for So Painful a Scandal (2009), Bohemian Souls (2011), The Wrong Passage (2012), Irregular Stain (2013), Out of The Abyss (2014), Dancing To Death (2016) and Trenches (2017).

The Chronology does not pretend to be complete and is, of course, a progressive work. Additional dates will be added as identified, with addenda supplements being issued at intervals, as required. The object of this publication is to collect in chronological order the events of the life of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This not only lists the dates applicable to Sir Arthur, but also to his family. No doubt some scholars will dispute some of the dates stated and I have accordingly listed at the end of this book the works that have been consulted for the sources.
All dates that appear in each of the sources quoted, have, I hope, been included. Biographical sources differ over the dates of many of the events of ACD’s life. Where such disagreements occur all of the alternative dates have been given in their appropriate chronological location, together with an indication in square brackets as to which source(s) support each dating. Where alternative dates exist, an asterisk (*) included after the source bracket as follows:
Asterisk Information: Entries with (*2) indicates that this is one of two entries for that event, derived from alternative or conflicting information or facts. (*3) indicates three entries, and so on. Where sources do not date certain events, these appear at the beginning of each year and indicated n.d.; other events that have no dates are inserted in the relevant part of the year and again indicated n.d.
Since the private publication of A Chronology of the Life of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle first appeared in 2000, numerous new sources were consulted, the original text and index were greatly revised, expanded and corrected, and it was then published in 2009, in the 2012 edition was completely revised, corrections were made and a further sources were consulted. The 2014 edition was again completely revised; further corrections were made, with new sources added, this was followed in 2016 by the Addenda and Corrigenda, the 2009, 2012, 2014 editions and the Addenda and Corrigenda were all published by MX Publishing Ltd. This new 2018 edition is a completely revised text and includes all of the revisions and corrections that were made previously plus the information and maps included in the Addenda and Corrigenda. Also included is the information and sources located during research from 2016. New photographs have been added to those already published and The Times is now listed in the sources with the date of publication.
There are a great number of entries stating ACD was at Southsea, ACD at Undershaw, ACD at Windlesham etc. The dates for these entries are taken from letters by ACD and are dated, so it can only be assumed that he was at the address given.
Abbreviations Used: Arthur Conan Doyle is as ACD. PLSS = The Portsmouth Literary and Scientific Society. UNLSS = The Upper Norwood Literary and Scientific Society.
For full details of the works cited within the chronology and the bibliography section, I would suggest that A Bibliography of A. Conan Doyle by Richard Lancelyn Green and John Michael Gibson, 1983 or 2000, A Bibliographic Listing of Stories, Poems, and Other Writings of A. Conan Doyle by Phillip G. Bergem, 2007 and A Doylean and Sherlockian Checklist of The Strand Magazine compiled by Phillip G. Bergem, 2007, are consulted.
I would be very grateful for any further dates and information that could be included in any future reprints of this chronology. I will continue to collect further information and issue an Addenda and Corrigenda as and when required, contact me at Brian W. Pugh, 20, Clare Road, Lewes. Sussex. Acknowledgements
I am indebted to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s autobiography, all the authors of the biographies and other sources used, and of course without A Bibliography of A. Conan Doyle by Richard Lancelyn Green and John Michael Gibson this chronology would never have been attempted. Not forgetting A Bibliographic Listing of Stories, Poems, and Other Writings of A. Conan Doyle by Philip G Bergem, a real gem of a publication.
I would also like to thank Philip & Jane Weller, Mrs. G. Doyle and my partner Christine for their support and encouragement in what started out as only a few page summary, to what you are now reading. I would like to thank Paul Spiring, for his research for our 2008 publication; On The Trail of Arthur Conan Doyle: An Illustrated Devon Tour, the research results are included in the Chronology. To Horace Coates and Roger Johnson for their advice and guidance on the presentation of the original version of the Chronology. To Marcus Geisser for putting me in touch with Vincent Delay, who in turn obtained permission from Bibliothèque cantonale et universitaire to use the photographs as listed. I would also like to thank Mark Doyle, Alistair Duncan and Derek Barnard for supplying corrections to the first edition, and Christopher Roden for his assistance in compiling the 2012 edition. Thanks also for their contributions to the 2014 edition go to Doug Wrigglesworth, Ken Cooper and Bill Barnes. I would like to acknowledge Phil Bergem, Oscar Ross, Mattias Boström, Michael Morton, Mark Alberstat, Roger Straughan, Leonie Paterson (Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh Archives), The Arthur Conan Doyle Collection at Toronto Public Library, and Alexis Barquin at The Arthur Conan Doyle Encyclopedia: arthur-conan-doyle.com and to Randall Stock for the Foreword and his suggestions for improvement on the text.
