RECORDS ON THE MOVE
I read with great interest Anthony Bevis’ letter in the August issue about the service records held at the Ministry of Defence (MOD) in Glasgow, and the article in ‘News’ on the same subject. I have also been following fellow family historians’ experiences with regard to the delay in receiving their request for service records on various genealogy forums and on social media.
I applied for two separate records in late January 2020 and have heard nothing, although I understand that some people who requested records after this date have received their documents.
I am pleased to hear that these records are now to be transferred to The National Archives (TNA), and understand that this undertaking is going to take some considerable time. However, this now raises the question: is the MOD going to honour the requests already in the system and deal with them in chronological order? Also, what happens if the records that have been requested have already been transferred to TNA?
