    The Thirst

I wiped down the counter of Beauty’s bar where Everybody is a Beauty. Funny, the only beautiful thing was that my shift ended each night. I could leave. While, I didn’t particularly care for catering to the drunk, the job paid the bills. This, I reminded myself when the images of my Victorian harp beckoned. My fingers itched to pluck strings instead of bottle openers. If I closed my eyes and ears, I could hear soft notes floating over the cheesy 80’s rock my boss preferred. I longed to be at home serenading my landlord. Instead, I Emerald Lazaro stood at the closing of my shift completing the daily crumb count.

There had to be some irony in a world where a talent paid less than a vice. But, I digress passing the cloth one last time on the counter before heading to the bathroom to change. By the end of my shift losing the funk and grit of the old city bar grew beyond tempting. I longed to strip out of the uniform of black shirt and pants. The anonymity of being just another face in the crowd of food service staff rubbed me wrong. After all, I had a skill. High time my other gig as a harp instructor became my sole source of income. If only life was that easy. With a snap of my fingers my bank account could gain an extra set of 000’s.

Unfortunately, my reality differed. Working multiple jobs really sucked to put it
