    Chapter 1

    20th October 2019

Every news channel, morning paper, social media site was swarming with people’s reaction over tomorrow’s hearing of the case of the Monster. People were being interviewed, big lawmakers and political leaders were being invited to almost every news channel for discussions and debates. Everyone thought that the Monster must be given the harshest, most severe punishment possible. Everyone thought that mere capital punishment would be a very easy death and a very lenient punishment for him. The whole country was united for once. People were rising above religion, caste and politics to stand against this monster. Everyone was just desperately waiting to sentence the monster to death.

    11:30 am

Lakshmi Nagar, Office of Advocate Shalini

    ––––––––

Advocate Shalini’s assistant, Aditi, enters the cabin hurriedly, with a bunch of files in her hand.

    ––––––––

    Aditi, Good morning Ma’am.

    ––––––––

Shalini, Good morning. Come in, Aditi. I was waiting for you. Have you brought all the files on the Monster case?

    ––––––––

Aditi, Yes, ma’am. I’ve been up all night, finishing up all the pending work and I’ve also worked around all the loopholes.

    ––––––––

Shalini, What loopholes Aditi? This is a crystal clear, open and shut case. I’ve been personally called even by the Chief Minister that this case needs to come to a decision in one hearing. The whole country is fuming. No one wants to see the monster alive for even another day. We will attempt to present all the witnesses and proofs by tomorrow and hang this Monster by evening itself. People are demanding harsher punishment for the Monster, but I don’t think that would be possible. If a harsher punishment is considered, the case will stretch unnecessarily and people will be even more furious. Even now the Monster has been kept in some classified location. Or else people would’ve broken into the prison and punished him themselves.

    ––––––––

Aditi, You’re right, ma’am. If it was up to me, I would have killed the Monster myself. What kind of person would so horrendously kill three innocent people?

    ––––––––

Shalini, I agree. That’s the reason why the media is calling him a Monster. These were not ordinary homicides. He had tortured his victims before mercilessly killing them. Two of his victims were just 16-year-old kids! How can anyone be so barbaric! By the way, I asked you to dig into this Monster’s personal life. Have you found anything useful?

    ––––––––

Aditi, I haven’t found out much, to be honest. I only know what I could find from the media and police investigations.

    ––––––––

Shalini, I can understand. We didn’t get enough time to find out more. And, what is the point of collecting any more information anyway? We already have all that we need to prosecute the Monster.

    ––––––––

Aditi, Absolutely, ma’am. The Monster has confessed to all his crimes during the police arrest, already. So I don’t think this case will require another hearing.

    ––––––––

Shalini, I hope so too, Aditi. Even if he flips his testimony in court, the Police have still prepared a solid charge sheet. We also have a witness who has seen him exit the house. Moreover, he has been caught red-handed after the last murder.

    ––––––––

Aditi, But ma’am, even if we manage to get him sentenced to death tomorrow, he could still make a mercy petition in the high court and the supreme court. And even if they manage to reject it, the whole process will still take time. The people won’t wait that long. They’ll get even more riled up.

    ––––––––

Shalini, Even if he does appeal for mercy in the high court or supreme court, it won't take more than a week to sanction capital punishment. This is not a typical murder case.

    ––––––––

Aditi, Ok, ma’am. In any case, I don’t think anyone will appeal in the courts on behalf of the Monster. He only has one known family member, his mother; who expired over a year ago. And his friends or relatives will definitely not want to come forward and embarrass themselves. Nobody wants their name to be associated with a demon like him.

    ––––––––

Shalini, This is good. Because the longer a devil like this one, is alive, the more harmful it is for society. The faster we get him the punishment he deserves, the better it is. And yes, what is this Monster’s real name, you said?

    Aditi, Dev.

    ––––––––

Shalini, Named after God and deeds of a Beast. God knows what his family was thinking, naming him, ‘Dev’. Ok, Aditi, I should head home now. You also wind up your work here and get some sleep. We have a long day ahead of us, tomorrow.

    ––––––––

Shalini left with these words and Aditi began preparing for tomorrow’s hearing.
