PROLOGUE
The message came completely unexpected, a date for that evening was not planned, not yet.
Getting through the day carelessly wasn’t easy.
First there was the lunch at the house of the in-laws: hypocritical and false bourgeoisies who could not see beyond their nose. Then she had to deal with the exuberance of the boys and put up with her husband's Judas Iscariot face. Not for much longer, she was ready to sworn it.
She had prepared herself in the best way, her body quivering at the thought of the beloved eyes that would probe every inch of her skin.
Her husband saw her now only as a money factory.
Not him, he saw her as she was: a woman who still had much to give, in every sense.
She zipped up her sleeveless sheath dress and wore stockings. One last touch of light make-up and she'd be ready.
She lingered in front of the mirror again, brushed the asymmetrical cut until it was perfect.
Her heart was beating fast, yet she feigned disinterest and annoyance when the taxi arrived under the house.
He was waiting for her at the villa. The excitement grew as she approached her destination.
She paid the taxi driver, added a good tip to mind her own business, and went off in total darkness.
She didn't find him waiting for her at the entrance, but she was used to his surprises.
A dim and very intimate light shone in the living room from the burning fireplace.
A thrill of pleasure ran through her like an electrifying shock.
What did he have in store for her that night?
I
Inspector Alessandro Risso lit his first cigarette in the morning: the blonde
and the excellent coffee, he had just tasted at the counter, were necessary to give him a semblance of a good start to the day.
Outside the sky was uncertain, partly hazy, he moved a chair and sat down at an outside table.
He lingered, perhaps a few moments too long, on the long legs of the holder and immersed himself in reading the sports page.
His order arrived: a fabulous slice of hot focaccia that sent him into ecstasy. He wasn't even distracted by Manu, the very young apprentice, who had started to sweep the side-walk and to hum.
The mobile phone began to vibrate in his pockets, he swept annoyed some crumbs from his anthracite coat and decided to answer.
«Risso’s speaking, who is this?» He articulated words, imagining the sudden end of his oasis of tranquillity.
«Inspector Risso, this is De Luca... A tragedy!
