May 1863

The war changed everything.

The satisfying clink of a bullet against a little metal pan was barely heard over the sound of mortars exploding overhead.

It was almost dark. The mortars usually stopped at night. Though no one could figure out why. The Yankees couldn’t see what they were firing at anyway. The best guess anyone had was that Yankees needed sleep, too.

Asa stretched her back. She wore a pair of her brother’s gray pants and white shirt with the shirttail tied at the waist and the sleeves rolled up.
