About this ebook

The Summer Olympic Games of 1932 were held in Los Angeles, California. The field hockey competition had only three teams, defending champion India, Japan, and the USA. India had a pair of brothers that were goal scoring machines. One was called The Wizard, perhaps the greatest field hockey player ever. The host Americans were making their first Olympic field hockey appearance and wanted to put on a good show with their new team. The team made their way west after try outs back east. The Indian team came east to again capture the gold medal. When the two teams met each other a record breaking performance occurred. The sport had never seen anything like it before at the Olympics.

Chapter 1 - They Came to America

It was Sunday May 30, 1932 when Dhyan Chand and his fourteen teammates boarded the Japanese ocean liner Haruna Maru. Chand, known as The Wizard, was an amazing field hockey player and prolific goal scorer from Allahabad, in southern Uttar Pradesh. They were about to sail into an unknown, but in many ways familiar, world of sports. The Indian Olympic Field Hockey team was on its way to San Francisco in the United States of America. Later, they would be playing in the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California.

On the way, they stopped in Singapore and while there played an exhibition game. From there the ship set course for Hong Kong while enduring rough seas. The contingent next landed in Shanghai, and then Kobe in Japan. While there for two days the team played two matches. Then the team took a train from Kobe to Tokyo where they stayed for five days.
