Whiskey
You were wine,
coating my throat, painting me red.
Red was our lifeline for a while.
We were everything we had to be back then.
When I uncovered the truth — that you were not wine but whiskey —
my throat closed up.
The whiskey burned my insides,
and I knew I could never think of you as wine again.
Timing
It was never about timing:
you were less innocent than me,
your edges outlined in darker hues.
It was never about timing:
I gave you more than I had,
more than I ever got back.
It was never about timing:
it was begging for answers,
and only hearing loud silence.
It was never about timing:
you knew you would hurt me,
and I chose to ignore your honesty.
It was never about timing:
it was relaying subtext of ‘I want you, too,’
and disappearing for days that turned into weeks that turned into
