Chapter 1 - A Broken Heart
Upper Amazon Basin, late 1400’s
High in the eastern slopes of the Andes in the upper Amazon Basin sets a great mountain covered with tropical forests. With a height of over eight thousand feet and sheer cliffs, Machu Picchu was shrouded in mystery and death, but at the top lay hope for Enrique’s people.
Born to an ordinary family, Enrique was a well-respected farmer and a gifted engineer. Making friends easily, Enrique soon gained the admiration of his peers and the royal family. With the blessing of the royal family, he and Princess Daniella were wed and were soon gifted with a son, Mateo. Once an ordinary man, now, ten years later, Enrique was the ruler of his people, and their safety rested on his shoulders.
The legend of the mountain proclaimed that the mythical Mystic Warriors would be the key to saving his people. Enrique knew that the secrets to protecting his people lay at the top of this mountain. With the threat of attack, Enrique had to be the victorious one. The warrior who could crest the top and summon the ancient ones would rule their nation. Enrique was determined that that warrior would be him.
Daniella understood this. A few months ago, Enrique and Daniella both had attempted this mountain trek. The treacherous terrain had cost Daniella her life when she fell to her death. It broke Enrique’s heart.
The moon barely shone between the clouds hanging heavy over the mountain. It was difficult to see as Enrique attempted to put one hand over the other and find a decent foothold. The climb up Machu Picchu was treacherous in the best of times, but in this inky blackness, the trek was nearly impossible but necessary.
A fine sheen of sweat coated the bronze arms and forehead of the young ruler of the village Machu. He was well-muscled, fit, and capable of making the climb. Dressed in his traditional attire, his head adorned with the sacred Ilautu, a ceremonial headpiece shaped in the image of Inti, the god of the sun, Enrique pushed on. This was the most important quest of his life…he had a village and a young son depending on him.
Tiny rocks falling from the ledge just above him peppered Enrique’s forehead, and the dirt clouded his vision. He heard a slight scuffle as more pebbles fell. Enrique knew that someone or something was on the ledge just above his head, but how was this possible?
Is there someone there?
Silence.
Speak!
Enrique’s demand was met with more silence.
Still unsure if what was up ahead was a threat, Enrique placed his foot on a higher rock, hefting his body further up the incline. As his fingers reached for the edge of the ledge, his hand was pushed away, and he lost his precarious grip on the mountain. The young warrior tumbled backward, plummeting the steep incline to his untimely death. Enrique had failed.
Chapter 2 – A Kingdom Lost
Village of Machu, the next day.
The moon from the night before was just bright enough to outline the majestic mountain. From the village courtyard, Mateo saw his father fall, and he was powerless to stop it. Now he felt like his head was in a fog because nothing seemed real anymore…he was devastated. As the only heir, his people would expect him to take his father’s place and lead them. But how can I, I’m just a boy? he thought. He looked down at himself, letting out a heavy sigh. Who is going to want a runt to lead them?
he said out loud.
Mateo wasn’t a runt, really, but at eight, he was small for his age. When he was a young baby, he had contracted a hacking cough with a raging fever and had nearly died. Even now, seven years later, he was sick more than not. As a result, his growth had been slow.
Mateo, it is time,
Maximo, his grandfather from his mother’s side, said from the doorway. Maximo’s hair had turned white long ago, and his body had become a bit frail. Even with his advanced age, the former ruler still stood tall and, to some, could be considered intimidating. But to Mateo, this man was his world. The old man’s eyes widened in surprise as he stepped further into the room. You are not even dressed?
Mateo turned away from his grandfather and shrugged. I….
A heavy sob wracked his shoulders. I don’t think I can do this.
You must, my son…it is your duty.
Mateo sniffed loudly and stole a peek at his grandfather. But what if I fail?
His grandfather placed the ceremonial robe over Mateo’s shoulders, then turned the boy to face him. The only way you can fail, young one, is if you don’t try.
The boy sniffed again, then nodded. I will try.
Maximo slowly smiled. "That is all I will ask
