    Prologue

Roxy, are you asleep? a voice whispered in the dark.

Roxy opened her eyes wearily to look at her older sister, Diana, who was practically leaning over her. I was. Why are you in my room?

The fosters are partying again tonight. I don’t want to stay in my room alone.

Roxy understood immediately what the problem was and scooted over to make room for her sister. The two of them had been in and out of foster care homes for the past five years. They had begun resorting to just referring to the members of each new foster family as the fosters instead of by their real names.

The latest set of foster parents were the worst they’d ever been with, especially the male. He took a particular interest in Diana that was awkward and creepy. When he drank, which he often did during their parties, he would ramble around, often opening the door to Diana’s room and sometimes going inside. Diana’s bedroom door lock was broken but Roxy’s still worked.

Did you lock my door? she asked Diana.

Yeah, and I put a chair in front of it. Why does he always come to my room?

Roxy felt both relieved and a little guilty that the male didn’t look at her the same way he did Diana. She was ten and Diana was fourteen. Her sister had begun developing early, making her appear more mature than her age. Still, Diana could not be mistaken for a grown-up.

Why do you think he does that? Roxy asked.

Because he can. He told me the last time he came to my room that it was all my fault. That I teased him to act that way.

Even at ten years old, she knew it was bullshit. Adults should take care of children, not abuse them. The wife couldn’t be clueless about what was happening.

Roxy was so frustrated and confused. He’s the grown-up and should know better. Why doesn’t his wife do something about it?

She’s in denial. I tried to talk to her, but she tells me I’m a little liar and I deserve everything I get. Then she drinks until she passes out. There’s no one around who can protect me.

Roxy wrapped her arms around her sister wanting to comfort her. I’ll protect you.

Diana shrugged out of the embrace. You’re just a kid. I’ll take care of myself. I just need a place to rest. I’ll be out of your way by morning.

She felt her sister’s pulling away from her like a slap in the face. For a while now, Diana had been treating Roxy like she was a burden, and had begun spending less and less time with her. It was during moments like these, where she got to be with her big sister, that she felt grateful. Diana was the only family she had. They should to take care of each other. Right now, she was a child and she felt her weakness. There wasn’t much she could do.

Heavy footsteps in the hallway made them both stiffen and glance toward the door. Her door handle rattled a bit but then stopped. She could hear a muffled curse before the footsteps faded away. Diana breathed easier. Roxy hated feeling so helpless. She swore she would get stronger and better so she could protect those she loved.

    Chapter 1

15 Years Later — Galactic Cage Fighter Circuit Ship #84

    Stop holding back, Roxy!

She turned toward the sound of her coach, Zara, growling at her from outside the cage. Big mistake. The distraction left her open to her opponent. The right hook struck her face hard, sending her back into the fencing.

    Damn it! Roxy swore.

Watch what you’re doing! Zara called out.

    Back off! Roxy yelled back.

Ever since Zara got pregnant, her bossy nature had kicked into overdrive. She rode everyone’s ass all the time, but she seemed to take more of her frustration out on Roxy. Roxy couldn’t wait until Zara went on maternity leave just so she could have a break.

She didn’t hate Zara. In fact, she admired the female. When Roxy was coming up in the circuit, she idolized Zara the Amazon and wanted to be just as strong as her. Zara had won more championships than any other female in the fighting circuits. It shocked everyone when Zara, still in her prime, took a position as one of the head trainers and stepped down from the regular circuit. Some had teased her about getting mated and some said starting her family had made her soft. Roxy knew for a fact that was a lie.

Stop playing and show some balls, Wildcat! Zara yelled back, using Roxy’s fighter tag name sarcastically.

Roxy growled as she pushed off of the fence and moved toward the new fighter she was sparring with — Mist the Valkyrie. She shoved the taller female away from her, giving them a bit of space. The newest member of the GCFA smirked down at her.

Little red, perhaps you should just give up now. I’m the stronger of the two of us.

Don’t let Mist get into your head. You’ve got this!

The encouragement came from her male counterpart — and, often, match partner — Zen the Sin. She didn’t glance his way, not wanting to get distracted. Zen was definitely a distraction with his perfectly sculpted body, dark eyes, and gorgeous hair. He was also a happily mated male.

She focused on her task at hand. Mist circled around Roxy. She had a taller and more muscular body frame and moved slightly slower, and, after tiring, more clumsily. Roxy took a deep breath and released it. Her own mantra played in her head.

Be fluid like a cat. Walk softly and breathe quietly. No one can touch you.

Mist made a move to rush at her. She waited, breathed, then moved to the left at the last minute. Mist flew past her, skidding to a stop. Roxy took advantage and kicked Mist’s legs. It was the other female’s one true weakness.

She had watched the newbies in practice for months, observing their strengths and their weaknesses. Mist was strong, except in her legs. Zara had gotten on her about working her leg strength more. Roxy used all her knowledge about her opponent and attacked.

Right punch, left punch, kick in the midsection. Jump, twist, kick face. One more kick to the knee. That was it. Mist fell back in what seemed like slow motion. The bigger they are, the harder they fall.

That’s the way you do it! Zen yelled out, punching his fists in the air.

Roxy rolled her eyes at his antics but had a half-smile on her face. He was like a big goofy brother to her and she was grateful for his support, although sometimes he went a little too far. He was always trying to play matchmaker, but she hadn’t been interested in any of the guys he sent her way.

Zara motioned for one of the assistant trainers to open the cage door. Roxy walked over to Mist and lowered her hand to help her up. Mist begrudgingly took it. The female was damn heavy.

I guess I need to work on my lower half strength.

Yep. Roxy turned and headed to the door. She glanced at Zara. Did I make the cut?

She was fighting to earn a spot in the next Galactic Battle Royale Games, or GBRG. It was a huge multi-sport race with many sequential endurance races. It occurred once every three years. Fighters from the different fighting circuits all over the galaxy competed. Each circuit would send twenty fighters. From Roxy’s circuit team, two females and two males would be chosen to compete. It was voluntary and each team leader got to pick which fighters would go.

They had already chosen Esan and Hercules as the male fighters to represent their circuit team. Mist would likely be one of the female fighters to go so there was one spot left. The GBRG committee would either have all the fighters compete individually or pair the fighters off randomly once they arrived. Superior fighters adapt to changes, including new partners. Those competing included full alien species, humans, and halfsies like her. She was part human and part Felon.

The Battle Royale Games were brutal and dangerous. A few fighters in the past had even lost their lives in the Games, which was why each competitor had to sign a liability agreement relinquishing the right to sue the Games for any injuries incurred. In return, the Games committee would pay for all medical services needed and provide a life insurance policy specifically to cover a fighter who might lose a life during the Games.

Because of the dangerous nature of the event, circuits were careful to screen and select fighters at the top of their game. Roxy had not yet gone to the Games, and she felt like it was her time. Also, she could really use the credits. Every fighter who participates receives a bonus of ten percent on top of their yearly pay, but the winner receives double their yearly income. She had plans for that money, so she was willing to put in the extra training. With the extra money, she could invest and hopefully do more charities.

Roxy sensed that Zara would refuse to send her. She looked at her trainer in frustration. Come on, Zara, I deserve to go. I’ve put in the extra training and have won every match you set me up against. I even beat Mist.

Zara looked her up and down, frowning in thought. You’ve bested her once, Roxy. You wasted time getting to the end. You should have taken Mist down sooner.

Am I going or not? Roxy put her hands on her hips as she glared up at Zara. Why was everyone so much taller than her, anyway?

I don’t know yet. I must talk to Nigel and Dom.

Roxy wanted to ask her more questions, but the tall brunette turned her back and walked away to check on Mist. Guess the training was over for now. She would just have to wait. Waiting patiently was not something she did well. It bothered her Zara didn’t show confidence in her ability to handle the Games. Not wanting anyone to see her lose control over her emotions, she began to head toward the exit for the training facility. Someone called her name, causing her to stop and turn around.

Zen caught up to her. You did great, Roxy.

Zara doesn’t want to select me.

She’s just trying to make sure you are ready for this. She won’t be there to look out for you and it pisses her off.

I’ll never get the spot. She hates me. Roxy had been feeling distant from everyone for a while.
