Chapter One
Menosaurus-Rex
Ifeel Mother Earth spinning through space, causing the sun to rise quickly through the thick forest. In the first seconds of daylight, rays hit dew drops; they glisten in the fiery light before falling from gnarly, winter branches, splashing into muddy puddles worn deep into the forest floor.
That sound of the splash, to me and the tiny insects that scurry below, is deafening. My acute Tyrannosaur-droid hearing picks up the slightest vibration. My droid eyesight penetrates through tree trunks, watching deer graze in silence, their jaws chewing on grasses while the sun’s orange haze reflects in their timid, brown eyes.
My predator eyes narrow to cunning slits. A stag raises his head swiftly while grazing; his horns cut the sun into distorted shapes.
I capture his photo, sending data to my Tyrannosaur computer-brain, giving me the stag’s size, weight, speed, and agility.
The stag listens intently, sensing danger. I see hot breath leave his wet nose. I home in to a red heart pounding strongly within his chest. The ground beneath his hooves begins to tremble when I step forward, leaving giant bird footprints; they vibrate with every thud. I growl deep in my belly.
The stag’s eyes widen; he steps back, agitated, sensing something’s out there. He stomps his hooves, raising his horns higher. The ground tremors intensify as my claws sink into swampy clay with every ten-ton press. The stag lets out a warning moan to his herd, smoky breath leaving his mouth. The deer begin to scatter, my droid-brain computing their numbers and locations in nanoseconds, but still the stag stands tall with his stance firm. Branches begin to twitch, tops of trees flail, and the ground vibrates.
Suddenly something catches the stag’s eye.
He freezes as if caught in full-beam headlights on a dark winter’s night. Glowing colors moving through the forest like a UFO. His body wants to run but he can’t; only his eyes show me his fear.
My colors move high up in the tree-line, mesmerizing the stag who’s transfixed on the glowing palette surging swiftly toward him. The terrain shakes with my prehistoric stride.
The forest creatures evacuate. Birds scatter from tree tops when my giant, glowing, Tyrannosaur-head appears in the clearing. I cry out a fearful, thundering roar that echoes throughout the forest. A grizzly bear runs, while a wolf hides its head under its paws.
The stag, with eyes full of terror, turns and springs away through the undergrowth. I lunge forward, calculating with military precision, clamping down my jaws—but missing the stag by a fraction of an inch. Then I give chase. My tail crashes through branches, as I run on hind legs at great speed.
The deer sprint into a clearing, scattering cows and sheep, causing immediate panic. I watch everything on four legs running. I burst into the field from the tree-line with an ear-splitting roar…
…and so does Tarock.
In his Tyrannosaur form, he bellows at the top of his prehistoric lungs just a few yards away from me.
We must be an unbelievable sight: two Tyrannosaurus Rexes chasing deer, sheep, and cows across a lush, green field in the year 3017.
We run stealthily in full-attack mode like lions after gazelles. We track everything down, thrusting our heads toward the animals, causing total chaos.
I’m the apex predator, the king of my domain. I feel immense power, energy, and strength. My computer-eye homes in; the data gives me calculations of every animal’s size, weight, speed, and agility.
But I don’t pick the slowest or the weakest. No, I pick the strongest and fastest. I continue pursuing the stag, chasing it across the grass, picking up tremendous speed. I hear the stag cry out, showing the whites of his eyes, unable to outrun his attacker. He tries to dart to the left and right, but I’m too fast. I calculate the stag’s every movement with split second precision. My on-board computer displays the words: "Target in range."
I throw my head forward, knocking the stag to the ground where he moans in defeat. I roar down on him, exposing my curved teeth, about to crush his side with a single blow. My on-board computer rings out: "Execute. Execute," while a missile-target diagram appears on the backs of my eyes.
Rex,
a voice interrupts inside my head. Rex, can you hear me? Come in, Rex.
I cock my head to one side, listening to the message, computing it to my brain.
Rex, where are you? You’re going to be late for school again. Rex, come in, Rex.
I move away from the stag, which stumbles to his hooves unharmed.
You can go, buddy,
I say in my human voice. I won’t hurt you. Thanks for the game!
Then using my computer-brain, I reply to Rion, I hear you loud and clear. We’re coming back to the farmhouse now.
I stare up at the sky, raising my head and opening my jaws. I blast my roar into space then turn to thunder back toward the tree-line.
Rex, have you and Tarock been chasing stags again?
Rion’s voice fills my head.
Oh, come on, Rion. We’re just having a bit of fun! I’d never harm anything; you know that.
Okay, okay, Rex. Just get back here as soon as possible. We’re late enough for school already.
Roger that, Rion. No sweat. I’ll use the trees on my way back.
Tarock moves alongside me as we head back toward the forest. Well done, Rex,
Tarock applauds. You’re learning well. Your stealth action is strong! You’re becoming a real hunter.
"Aww, thanks, Tarock. I learned everything from you, buddy. Rion wants us back at the farmhouse… I’m late for school."
Okay, Rex, let’s go. I’ll race you,
he roars.
You’re on, Tarock!
We thunder toward the trees, our tails whipping behind us. Grass and mud fly.
I reach the edge of the forest first, changing from my Tyrannosaur form into an ape. I leap silently for a branch, swinging high through the trees. "Woo hoo! I shout.
This is amazing… woo hoo… absolutely amazing!"
Hey, Rex,
Tarock shouts in my head, that’s cheating!
The benefits of being half-Tyrannosaur, half-Yeti-droid, Tarock!
I shout back, swinging into the distance.
While I move with the wind whistling through my ears, I’ll tell you the story so far.
My name is Rex Hunt. I’m fourteen-years-old; I was in a plane crash. My mother was killed instantly. I was revived by droid paramedics at the scene and taken to a hospital in Manhattan where a specialist surgeon rebuilt me with a computer-brain, a titanium body, and synthetic blood cells. Basically, I was half-human half-droid, living in the thirty-first century. But time was running out; the technology was failing, and my human body parts were rejecting the droid parts. My synthetic cells were breaking down. One day, an alien dinosaur landed in the forest around the farmhouse where I live with my father and my companion yeti-droid, Rion, in upstate New York.
Tarock is the alien dinosaur. He’s a prehistoric Menosaur from a planet called Prehistoria in a galaxy millions of light years away. Rion and I became friends with Tarock, tried to help him and save him from the government and the Marines who were trying to kill him. We hid him from the world.
Tarock recognized something in me, something that was the same as his Menosaur biology. When I finally fell ill and couldn’t function anymore, we were shot down in our aero-car by the Marines who were trying to take Tarock out. They thought we were killed, but we weren’t. We survived the attack.
Tarock saved me, along with Rion. Tarock infused his Grandidierite Menosaur powers into me, mixing them with my droid biology. Then Rion used his droid-data to enhance mine, upgrade me, and transform me into what I am now.
I’m half Menosaur-T-Rex and half yeti-droid. I have unimaginable powers computerized with the most advanced technology. I am a Tyrannosaurus Rex with an intelligent droid-computer-brain! I’m unstoppable. I can change into a Tyrannosaur at will and have the yeti-droid strength of ten men.
Now, my mission is to help Tarock get back to the safety of his planet. We must find a way to get to Lanntoria (Madagascar) to find the Grandidierite rock that Tarock needs. He can harness its power so that he can build a rock ship and return to his home planet, Prehistoria.
But something’s happening.
I felt something out in the clearing when I was chasing the stag. Someone or something was watching us. I’ve felt this for the last few days.
Now, swinging through the trees, I glance back over my shoulder. I catch sunlight bouncing off a device in the distance, then it quickly disappears.
Chapter Two
Dark Matter
My titanium legs land silently at the edge of the forest where Rion’s waiting by a new aero-car to take me to school. I’m quiet now, so agile that even his acute droid-hearing doesn’t detect me standing behind him.
"Rion," I whisper in his ear, making him jump with fright.
Master Rex, I suppose you think that’s funny? You’re late and I’m responsible. I see you and Tarock have been terrorizing the local farm animals again?
Oh, come on, Rion… I was just getting a little sheepdog practice in. Besides, I’ve never eaten one of them. I wouldn’t want to go to school with cow-breath now, would I? I’ve got a class with Eden this morning!
"Hmm… a Tyrannosaurus Rex sheepherder who doesn’t want to eat on the job because he has
