    ABOUT THE AUTHOR

    CHAPTER ONE

People are Mad at Each Other

MILDRED MISTLETOE WAS different from other cats. Because her black coat had only a few speckles of white, some people thought she looked like a Halloween cat. Far from it.

Mildred Mistletoe had been born under the Christmas tree, actually in the manger, on Christmas Day. Her Mama Cat had pawed the Baby Jesus and his parent out of the manger, but permitted the sheep and donkey to stay.

Mama Cat, a local stray who allowed herself to be brought indoors during a snowstorm, did not stick around to care for Mildred after her birth. Sometimes that made Mildred sad, but she had long ago decided that Mama Cat was a free spirit. And she had found Mildred a good home.

Mildred's humans, twins Fergie and Frank O’Hara, were excellent people parents. In fact, they loved her so much that Mildred had to be careful not to show that either was her favorite. If she slept with Fergie at night, she permitted Frank to feed her the next morning.

They definitely preferred Mildred over Dog, whom they didn't like to take for walks when it rained. Dog being a dork needed humans to guide him on a leash when he went outside. Mildred could always find her way home. She knew where her food bowl was.

But Mildred Mistletoe's birthday, always an occasion for family presents and good food, was not shaping up as the usual season of good cheer. In fact, if Fergie and Frank did not stop bickering, Christmas would be ruined. Mildred had to take matters into her own paws.

When they still rode bikes with training wheels, Mildred could always figure out any problem they had. She had to understand it before she could fix it.
