    Chapter 1

It was near midnight, just as Santa’s workshop was closing down, when the announcement came over the loudspeaker.

Will Jumper, Sneezer and Snorter please come to the main office? Will Jumper, Sneezer and Snorter please …

Jumper was the most athletic elf, tall, thin, strong and handsome, with waves of golden hair. Sneezer was in charge of quality control in the workshop, a most serious elf, and Snorter expertly handed Santa’s reindeer. He could talk to them and he spent most of his time with them, grooming them and feeding them and telling them what wonderful creatures they were.

From high over the workshop, Jumper grabbed a bright shiny green package festooned with red ribbons off the top shelf. He let gravity float him back down to the snow-dusted floor. He turned to place the package in the basket hanging at Prancer’s side, but Prancer had wandered off. No worries. Snorter was right there to call him back with a gentle shake of the head and a loud exhalation from his nose, giving out the call for Prancer to return to work in reindeer-speak.

Hearing the summons, Prancer’s ears perked up and he trotted across the floor to Jumper, who stood holding the package patiently.

Wait a minute, Sneezer said, hurrying over. We never can be too careful. Let me check the package again before we load it in Santa’s bag. I want to make sure it’s clean and safe for the children to play with and ready to go.

When Prancer stopped by Jumper’s side, Jumper handed the package to Sneezer, who promptly held it up to his nose and took a good long whiff of it. He looked it over carefully, examining it on all sides.

Aaaah, good, Sneezer said, exhaling. It smells like pine cones. It’s a wonderful package! Direct from Santa! Nothing wrong with this package. This package has passed its final quality control check. It’s ready to go. All’s right with the world.

Ha! Snorter said. My reindeer say differently. Just because one package is right doesn’t mean everything is right in the world.

    Oh, Snorter,
