This is the easy part! Compared to ancient Earth explorers we can see exactly where we are going, all of us on Earth can see Mars from our homes. Ancient Earth explorers did not have a clue what they were going to find, they had no maps or charts, had to deal with tides and sometimes had unfriendly natives when they arrived, but their biggest fear was they did not know if they were going to fall off the edge of the flat Earth into space.
