    Chapter 1

    Tamsin

Kira passed me a knowing look as we grabbed breakfast at the hotel’s buffet. Clad in a pair of black yoga pants and matching tank, she rocked her hips. Ooooh… what did you do last night?

My cheeks heated and I ducked my head. "I didn’t do anything."

Her sapphire eyes widened in shock. Rafe? He… she jutted her chin toward my nether regions "…did that?"

The blush spread to the tips of my ears. Mm-hmm.

Flabbergasted, she sputtered, Get the fuck out! No way! Did you reciprocate?

I bit my lip. I tried, but he wouldn’t let me. He said he didn’t want to take my choice away despite us being bound by the Goddess.

Packing her plate full of sausage links, she whistled. Well isn’t that interesting. In all the years I’ve known him he’s never gone down on a woman. He’s also never passed on sex. Are you sure he’s feeling alright? Like, is his junk not working or something?

Caught off guard, I choked on my own spit. Gasping, I coughed. "Yes, his junk is working. Jesus, Kira."

A pancake flew across the room and slapped against her upper back. Stiffening, she tossed her raven hair from her face and zeroed in on Oreo’s location.

Paling, he pointed his finger at Jakob beneath the table.

Oblivious, Jakob shoveled food into his mouth so quickly I highly doubted he was the culprit.

Kira heaved a sigh. They’re going to be the death of me.

I chortled as the disc hit the floor with a soft poof. It could be worse. There could have been syrup on it.

Her nostrils flared. I’d neuter them both if it did.

The lie filled the air with a bitter tang.

Wrinkling my nose, I took the tongs from her fingers. Fibber. Move over. It’s my turn.

Grudgingly, she snapped up the pancake and tossed it into the trash. I’m so tired. The little shits kept us up all night, and there was a bill under our door this morning. Do you know what they did?

Selecting the crispiest pieces of bacon, I answered, Maybe. Did they order the smut channels?

How the hell did you know?

Chuckling, I closed the silver lid and moved on to the eggs. They’re not even two years old, but they’re similar to human teens, right? Well, that’s what young boys do.

Whisper yelling, she hissed, Oreo’s never done that. Ren would have beaten him blind. It had to have been Jakob.

My plate clattered on the counter. Grabbing her hand, I dragged her to the hall. Irritation colored my words. They had their own room. Even if it was Jakob, Oreo watched right along with him. You cannot blame one without the other. Complacency is not an excuse.

She pouted. I know. I just didn’t realize how hard this would be.

I patted her shoulder in sympathy. I won’t say it’s going to be easy, because it’s not true. But you have a whole Clan to back you if you need a break.

Her lips twitched. Does that include you and Rafe?

Now that would be funny to see. Hiding my glee, I nodded. Yes, after we get the Mojave and Roswell Clans back. I paused. Which reminds me. I want you and Creed to stay here with the pups.

    Distressed, she sputtered, Creed won’t—

Lenna’s snarl tumbled through the Link. This is not a debate.

Kira crossed her arms and jutted her jaw out defiantly. I was going to say Creed won’t stay behind unless you order him to.

As an Omega only she could get away with backtalking an Alpha. She was more and less at the same time. Loathe as I was to admit it, I loved her sass.

Flattening her snowy ears in my mind’s eye, Lenna addressed Kira’s twin, Nera, will Kira stay away from the fight?

Understanding dawned. Kira didn’t have to obey anyone.

Squinting, Kira spat her answer before Nera could respond, Nope. And you can’t make me.

My previous opinion came back to bite me in the ass. Fan-fucking-tastic.

This was going to be a huge problem.

Balancing one dish on my palm and the other on the inside of my wrist, I swiped the plastic card through the sensor. Whirring sounded as the lock released, and I let myself inside.

    Rafe strode from the bathroom.

Desire lit my veins on fire.

Wet from the shower, his russet hair held a darker hue and touched along the sides of his temples. Droplets rolled down the hard expanse of his perfectly toned abdomen. Riding low on his hips, the small white towel barely concealed his reaction to my obvious interest. He inhaled, and a circle of gold ringed his cobalt eyes.

    Good morning, Mate.

The deep purr brought forth the image of his face buried between my thighs.

    Oh, God. Focus!

Clearing my throat, I shakily walked to the desk. The plates rattled on the veneered surface. H-hi. Um. We need to talk.

My breath caught as he wrapped his hands around my waist. Heat radiated from his skin in waves. Gently, he nuzzled my neck. His stubbled chin left goosebumps in its wake, and the spicy scent of his mark increased. About what? How you are mine and I am yours?

Quivering, I pulled away and snatched a pillow from the bed. Holding it up as a shield, I blurted, Kira refuses to stay behind with Jakob and Oreo.

He frowned. Did you honestly think she would?

I guffawed. But she promised Ren she’d look after them. How can she do that if we’re going into battle?

Grabbing his pack from the floor, he shrugged while digging through its contents. We need her, Tamsin. Kira’s uniquely suited to temper Dominant Wolves. Besides, Jakob will need to see his Pack’s killers brought to justice. Oreo, too. If not for the Royals, his mother would still be alive.

Shocked, I blinked. They’re children, Rafe.

Choosing a grey shirt at random he pulled it over his head. No. They’re Shifters. There’s a big difference. I don’t expect you to understand, at least not yet. It’s going to take time for you to get used to our way of life.

His dismissive tone set my teeth on edge. None of this made any sense.

Food forgotten, I jerked my backpack from the closet and snagged the keys for the Rover. I’ll be in the car.

    Tamsin, wait—

I let the door swing closed behind me.

    Rafe

Lark snorted from his den. You need to work on your delivery.

Scowling, Rafe tugged on a pair of jeans. I see you were strangely silent on the subject.

Chuffing, his twin sat on his haunches. Teaching you is akin to taking on a mountain lion by myself. Which I might add, Tamsin did. You’re single-minded and refuse to listen to reason. Should I list your previous mistakes regarding Tamsin?

Raising his upper lip, Rafe grouched, No. I’m well aware of them.

Obviously not. Taking control, Lark turned their eyes to the meals she’d returned with. So why wouldn’t you explain our ways over the bounty she provided? Tamsin is feeling off-balance. The pairing isn’t complete. She’s trying very hard to get to know you, and you’re making the process incredibly difficult.

He skimmed over the cheese-riddled piles of eggs and bacon. Mouth watering, he licked his lips. Despite the shower he’d taken he could still taste the saltiness of Tamsin’s womanhood. She seemed fine last night.

Lark’s meaning hit him like a ton of bricks.

Tamsin had willingly come to his bed. Though he’d pleased her, he had to admit his rejection might have hurt her feelings.

Shit. What else had Kira told her?

I can’t take away her choice, Lark. She didn’t ask for any of this. When she’s ready we’ll complete the pairing.

Amber lit Lark’s gaze, and he rumbled, That’s just it. You won’t know when she’s ready, Rafe. Every second you waste, our Clan becomes more and more restless.

With that, Lark’s presence disappeared from his thoughts.

Pulling on his socks and boots, he double-checked the room for anything they’d left behind. Now he would need to hit the breakfast bar again and get her something to eat.

    His Mate couldn’t go hungry.

Glowering, he exited the hotel with his bundle triple wrapped in napkins.

He should have realized the complimentary breakfast was just that. Free for guests. Taking something to go was strangely taboo. The poor attendant was probably still crying from her attempt to intervene. One look was all it took to send her scampering back to the kitchen. It wasn’t his fault. Humans had so many rules. What difference did it make whether he stayed to eat or brought it with him? Their stay was paid for. Period.

Oil slicked to his fingers as he neared the SUV. Wrinkling his nose in distaste, he pulled open the driver-side door.

Wearing a red flannel, Creed snickered from the passenger seat. His cobalt eyes danced. Aw, you brought me food? You shouldn’t have.

Jakob and Oreo squished themselves together on the center console. Eyes wide, they sniffed the air in tandem.

Irritation flickered through Rafe. Where is Tamsin?

Holding up the key fob, Creed nodded to the windshield. We switched.

Four spaces over, the distinct sound of Kira’s Rover shifting into gear met Rafe’s ears.

    Damnit.

    Kira

When Tamsin asked to swap with Creed, the boys jumped at the chance. Now, though, I kind of wished they hadn’t. We had at least two hours until the rally point in Kelso.

Fidgeting with the large hole decorating the denim encasing one thigh, she sighed. The tops of her breasts rose with the motion. Her white tank nearly matched the braid haphazardly dangling over one shoulder. Thickly fanned lashes outlined her gold-flecked jade irises. She pursed her pink lips, and her cheeks puffed out for another exhale.

If you sigh one more time, Artemis help me, I will slap you.

The breath whooshed from her mouth.

Cocking back my arm I smacked her bicep. I warned you.

Rubbing away the small red mark, her face screwed up. You totally hit my boob!

Trying and failing to contain my laughter, I snarked, Oops. Serves you right.

Pfft. Lifting the low-cut collar of her shirt, she checked for any lasting damage. Finding none, her chest expanded.

I waved my hand threateningly. Seriously?

Baring her teeth, she slumped back in her seat. Just focus on the road, Kira.

Gripping the steering wheel, I mocked, Focus on the road, Kira. Blah, blah. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy to be your chauffeur, but what crawled up your ass?

    Silence.

Fine. Flipping through the radio stations I settled on hip-hop. I knew she preferred rock. Breakfast at Tiffany’s and bottles of bubbles. Girls who like tattoos and getting in trouble. Lashes and diamonds, ATM machines. Buy myself all of my favorite things—

Glaring, she hit the power button. It’s bad enough your room looks like Barbie and Hello Kitty vomited everywhere. Do we really have to listen to this?

My heart stuttered at the thought of Clan Home. The rogues had to have found it by now. They had no other reason to linger in Washington for so long. All of my memories and keepsakes were likely reduced to ash and dust.

    Nera whimpered softly.

Tamsin realized her mistake, and her brows furrowed. Shit. I’m sorry, Kira. I feel like I’m fumbling around in the dark here.

Deciding to cut her some slack I tempered my tone, You know, when all of this is done it’ll be your home too.

Curling her fingers into fists, she crossed her legs. Do you think that’ll be in the near future? As it is, we don’t know what we’ll find in the Mojave Desert or how many Royals are waiting for us. We kick some ass, then what? Try to find the Rocky and Winifred Packs? Are they alive, or did they meet the same fate as Jakob’s Clan? Pausing, she whispered, Lotte wants me, Kira. He doesn’t care about anything else. I can’t shake the feeling that he’s in my head, my dreams. To make matters worse Rafe wouldn’t complete our bond. Things are spinning out of control.

    Whoa. Information overload.

I shrugged. "So what if Lotte wants you? He can’t have you. You’re our Alpha, and nothing will ever change that. To the Rafe bit? He’s an ass. You
