- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A Dance of Cranes (A Birder Murder Mystery) by Steve BurrowsInspector Domenic Jejeune finds out his brother (Damian) has gone missing while doing research on Whooping Cranes. Also his (somewhat estranged) girl friend (Lindy) is kidnapped. He enlists the help of his Danny Maik to help find Lindy. The story moves at a steady pace with well rounded characters and original plot. Set in Canada and the United States this becomes a challenge for D.I. Jejeune. The characters are likable, well rounded giving me the feel of reality. I also enjoyed the integration of Cranes to the story. I learned a bit (about birds) from this thrilling read. Overall I found A Dance of Cranes enjoyable and feel those who love a great murder mystery will as well. I also intend to read more from Steve Burrows.* I received this book from Library Thing in exchange for an honest review.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Overall, this was a good read. There were quite a few plot lines, but it wasn't difficult to keep them straight. The characters were well-developed and the story was interesting. My main issue is that this is book 6 in a series and was heavily dependent on what had come before. I think if I had read any of the previous books (particularly number 5) this book would have been more enjoyable - it was like watching the second film in a two-part series (like seeing Kill Bill Vol. 2 never have seen (or known anything about) Kill Bill Vol.1.)
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Lots of birder information and wilderness. Plot is complex. Could have used some more editing. A little long, some minor gaffs. Overall a good addition to the series.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5This book is very difficult to read. Maybe bird people enjoy this type of story but I did not. It was very hard to follow as it really jumped around. I appreciate LibraryThing allowing me to read this book.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This was an ok book.I think for me it would have been better if I had read the previous books in the series.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This was amazing! I am not sure what I expected, especially when I started reading it and I thought it was going to be an amateur sleuth since it has birds and birdwatchers as a central premise. But it's a police procedural with people who also watch birds. A set of mysteries to be solved, not just one. Several things going on at once, different points of view. I worried that i'd have trouble keeping everyone straight since this is #6 in a series, and I did a bit at first, but it all straightened out just fine after a chapter. I'm not sure I have a favorite character, each has a unique quality to like or not. Each story being told keeps the pages moving and quickly. I am adding this series to my wishlist [aka WWBL] .. I want to start at the beginning to catch up. I enjoyed the book immensely without any reading of the previous books. I can only imagine how wonderful it will be reading from the beginningI can definitely recommend this book.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This turned out to be a good mystery with interesting information on birding, and environmental concerns. It was hard to follow at times due to the interwinding of at least 3 different plot lines which took a long time to come together to show the reasons these characters acted as they did. In fact one plot line went off on its own and seemed to be included to set up that character for the next book in the series. The author in general was fond of cliff hangers so I'm sure many of the story lines will be resolved in the next book. But still with its faults it kept me interested in the outcome of the story.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5The main character, DCI Domenic Jejeune, has gone to Canada to search for his brother who has gone missing in the vast wilderness of Wood Buffalo National Park with scientist who hired him to trap Whooping Cranes. Domenic has also ended his relationship with his girlfriend Lindy in an effort to protect her from Ray Hayes who has attempted to kill her twice. Back in Saltmarsh, Norfolk, England, his Sergeant has been shadowing Lindy and a murder has been committed. The case has been given to newly promoted Sergeant Susan Salter and Jejeaune's sergeant, Danny Maik is to discreetly oversee her as things progress. In the meantime Jejeune's brother has involved their friend Juan "Traz" Perez by sending him coordinates that coincide with Whooping Crane stop overs and military bases plus someone just happens to meet Traz when he stops in Aransas saying he's headed her way. Then Lindy disappears after surveillance was lifted on her. There's a lot going on in this book and I was surprised at who committed the Saltmarsh murder and why Lindy was kidnapped.
