We slept in hospital rooms wearing soft cotton gowns and they called us patients, but we all knew we were there to die. All of us except Kathy. She held on to hope. The cure, she assured me, would come when we least expected it. On a day like any other.

We'll be sitting on our beds twiddlin' our thumbs or down in the cafeteria gulpin' down hard rolls and BAM: 'You're cured!' Outta nowhere. Like a flash a' lightnin', she said. Mark my words.
