FIRST THINGS FIRST
Las_Olas_-Grand_Fort_Lauderdale copyWhy Fort Lauderdale?
Fort Lauderdale, for good or ill, has always been defined not for what it is, really, as for what it lies between. About 40 miles to the north is Palm Beach. About 25 miles south is Miami. A million images flood the mind when you think of Miami. (Cocaine Cowboys, the Mariel Boatlift, South Beach, the nightlife, Little Havana, an international port and banking center.) Similarly, a million images leap into your mind when you conjure up Palm Beach (Worth Avenue, Cartier, the Kennedys, wealthy socialites, vast fortunes, elderly women with young gigolos.)
And Fort Lauderdale? What images jump into your mind when you first think of the town? Connie Francis and Where the Boys Are
? Spring Break? Sailboats?
Well, Fort Lauderdale has come a long way since that 1960 movie.
And the good thing that has made Fort Lauderdale so attractive for so long is that it is not Miami and it is not Palm Beach. It’s just that little bit of in between
that makes Fort Lauderdale so great. And, being in the middle of the Gold Coast, Fort Lauderdale is a perfect location if you like Miami or Palm Beach, but don’t want to live there. You’re just a few minutes away by I-95 or the Turnpike from posh Palm Beach or the nonstop excitement of Miami.
Wonderful smaller towns (Davie, Dania, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Lighthouse Point) offer extremely cheap housing (if you want to live here) and lodgings, if you’re visiting. And you’re close-close-close to all the action. (I know a lot of actors who live in these towns for the very reason that they are easily able to go to auditions in Miami or Palm Beach. When they get jobs, they’re never too far away.)
