About this ebook

Haven’t you wondered about the purpose of human existence, the prevalence of evil or what makes people “tick”? Then settle in for an enthralling literary journey.

Unearthed Tales of Destined Souls: Stories for Pondering Mortals Volume 1 is an engrossing collection of fifteen stories written in a variety of genres such as fantasy, romance, historical, Scripture-inspired and essay, about ordinary people summoning the forces inside themselves to meet extraordinary challenges of faith, disappointment, or strength to cope with personal and social obstacles before them.

Some stories explore America's outrageous and tragic racial history. Some offer imaginative musings about the incarnation of the soul and the conversations between Eden's first couple. Other stories are about biblical and modern men and armies that want to dominate populations through fear and terrorism. Others are whimsical, such as a wife from beyond the grave arranges a blind date for her widower husband. There is an essay about what love is and where to find it. The collection ends with a unique Christmas story from a fresh perspective, that of a shepherd boy who is present at Angel Gabriel's announcement of the Savior's birth.

In all the stories, the soul within, uniquely shaped by life experiences, is palpable whether featured “outside the mind” of the protagonist or inside the psyche. These stories promise to stir reflection because the awesome and frequently awful truths revealed about the characters and themes are relevant and timeless.

While countless millions of tales buried beneath the dust of forgotten memory remain untold, the souls within these pages are anxious to tell you theirs.

Paulette Ivy Harris

PAULETTE IVY HARRIS’ latest adult ebook, an anthology called UNEARTHED TALES OF DESTINED SOULS: Stories for Pondering Mortals Volume 1 (available NOW in paperback at your favorite online retailers), presents fifteen action-driven stories in a variety of fiction genres including fantasy, romance, historical, Scripture-inspired and essay. It includes a unique perspective of the first Christmas as witnessed by a shepherd teenager. Other stories serve up a deep-dish slice from the lives of ordinary people coping extraordinarily with personal and social obstacles, such as love, oppression, racial intolerance, and loss. The stories will invoke reflection as you experience the characters’ inner most beings which influence and motivate them. In her previous adult ebook, BENEATH EVERY TROUBLIN' STONE (2012), Paulette uses her extensive research of American history and African American history to create Bernice Tulley, the historical fiction heroine in who comes of age in the early 1900s. It is the story of a woman who struggles for success in love, family, and business in a society where racial prejudice rules the times. It was inspired by a beloved great-ancestor in her family tree. In 2019, Ms. Harris is proud to bring this book to readers in paperback at your favorite online retailers. IS THIS ALL I TRULY AM? (2013) is Paulette's second ebook for children and features her own illustrations in watercolors. This story of self-discovery is about Deer One, an orphaned fawn, who is fostered by a dog family and has to learn who and what she was created to be. Includes insightful Bible references. RUMA, WARRIOR PRINCESS (2012) is Paulette's first children's ebook. This humorous story is inspired by a real puppy that brings joy back into the life of a mother and daughter who lost a pet. In 1990, Paulette delved into a long-time curiosity: her ancestral roots. The genealogy bug bit her and her family ancestry searches turned into an eighteen-year hobby before it inspired her to write her first nonfiction book, ALWAYS A BLESSING IN THE END: THE CHRONICLES OF THE FOUR ANCESTRAL LINEAGES OF BEN IVY & RUTH THOMPSON, published in 2005 in paperback (available at select online book retailers). In it she narrates the discoveries and the lives of her African American ancestors from 1790 through the subsequent centuries. After nearly thirty years, her search to learn more about her ancestors continues. Paulette Ivy Harris was born in suburban St. Louis, Missouri. She graduated from Loyola University in Chicago with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. She worked in the insurance industry for twelve years before her husband’s retail management career began to frequently relocate her and their young son to cities and towns within central Illinois and Indiana. Currently a resident of suburban Indianapolis, she and her husband have been married for over forty-two years and they have one adult son. INTRODUCTION

    ______________________________________________________________________

What better way to begin a collection of short stories with souls in its title than with a story that conceives the origin of the soul.

Imagine an ethereal tour guide/interpreter imports you to Caelum Salvari, a fantastical, celestial dimension. You’ve been chosen to audit the commencement assembly of supernal beings prior to their spiritual transition to mortal life on Earth. You hear and see, through the interpreter, the Transition Minister’s presentation to the immortal assembly about the complexities and foibles of the human persona.

In Final Instructions before Incarnation, this conscious-provoking discourse challenges traditional thought about the origin of the soul, the invisible presence that resides in us. You learn truths about the supernal beings that inhabit modern humankind. It challenges notions about whom and what we truly are inside, about the influencers that drive our behavior, and about preexistence and the afterlife.

The Bible story in Genesis about the first two souls on Earth and their expulsion from the garden of Eden is well-known. Ever wonder what Eve might have said to Adam after she ate the forbidden fruit? How about Eve’s conversation with the King of Connivers? Adam and Eve’s fall from grace is retold in two short-short stories. Eve of the Dragon is told by the first woman; and the evil reptilian trickster tells his side of the story in Dragon’s Revenge.

Must Have Calla Lilies addresses a common question about being in love: How do you mend a broken heart? Sethryn Polk’s prepubescent heart is shattered by the death of her grade-school crush. The responsibility she takes on about her part in the tragedy haunts her in adult life and causes her to fear and view romantic involvements as not worth the risk of another heartbreak. Her inner counselor fights against her stubborn, smothering ego, but determines to change her view.

Many people beseech at the boundaries of others’ acceptance their whole lives and never gain it. In Freed, Archie Sims struggles to seize the freedom to be authentic, despite scorn from narrow-minded people in his rural town. Will he learn that it’s better to live life on his terms or will he learn too late?

God Sent a Woman exhumes the drama between the verses written in the Bible’s book of Judith. The Israelites in Bethulia face a dilemma: submit to slavery under Nebuchadnezzar, King of the Assyrians, or be wiped off the mountain they’ve settled since their exodus out of Egypt. Judith, a mourning widow, puts her life in jeopardy when she leaves Bethulia to present a plan of appeasement to King Nebuchadnezzar’s favorite military brute, Chief General Holofernes. To save her people from annihilation, Judith’s faith in God must not falter.

People spend thousands of dollars on surrogacy for a chance to have a biological child. In The Godsend, Laurel and Vance Girard, a middle-aged couple, mourn the recent death of their adult son, their only child, and conclude surrogacy is the answer to fulfill their dream for a grandbaby; or is it?

For our nation’s Intelligence community, the challenge in preventing imminent threats to the lives and liberty of Americans is that it must be successful a hundred percent of the time. With Conspicuous Fortitude shines light on the crucial mission that our country’s Law Enforcement and Intelligence organizations are tasked: to find and apprehend plotters and perpetrators of domestic terrorism. This time, the city of Indianapolis is on the terrorists’ docket.

The criminal justice the Mack family deserves goes unfulfilled for three decades. What evidence remains about the forgotten murder of their son, Lincoln Mack? Who’ll come forward and testify that the heinous and far-too-common crime happened? Dereliction of Justice tells about the Mack lynching, one of nearly five thousand committed between 1882 and 1968 across the South where Jim Crow injustice had oppressed black citizens since the Civil War ended; an era when white supremacists, like the Ku Klux Klan, went unpunished for this and other violence against black Americans.

Unintentionally Found continues the previous despicable story, but through the eyes of the murder victim, Lincoln Mack. This unfortunate, young soul describes his outrage and the horror of being lynched. His introspection during the brutal attack reveals intimate moments in his teenage life, his aspirations, and his last thoughts of the loved ones he leaves behind. The trip through this dark passage in America’s racial history recounts oppressive social prejudices and biased political thinking that twenty-first century white nationalists want our nation to return.

In the short-short story, Here’s To Renita, Dex Ephraim, a widower, receives a letter in the mail with a honey-do list of requests from his recent-deceased wife. He ponders whether to follow or ignore his wife’s appeals. The path to a fulfilled life for him and their children depends on his choice.

A prequel to Harris’ previous historical novel, Beneath Every Troublin’ Stone, The Brooch is about a hand-crafted cameo that represents a father’s love for his daughter. It embarks on a poignant journey. It crosses an ocean, traverses the centuries by passing through generations of women, and along its way witnesses the racial intolerance that remains in American culture today. Yet the lovely adornment elicits joy, gives solace, and carries the emotional memories of each woman who inherits and wears it.

Can teenage love bloom after forty-years? In Unexplored Crush, the social mores of the 1970s nixes the relationship between Ken Wilhelm and Odelia Dunham, two high-schoolers. They graduate, an ocean parts them, and so they journey separately through their adult lives. A chance midlife encounter reconnects them; however, a tragic accident threatens the renewed opportunity to kindle their high school infatuation.

In an anthology where the soul is the theme, an essay on love demands its place. Our world’s airwaves are saturated with reports of people inflicting pain and suffering on one another. So common is the upward trend of intolerance and hate, we ask in our collective bewilderment what is love and where can we find it? Supported by Scripture, Love Energy answers those questions and suggests what it will take to reverse hate’s disheartening trend and build hope for humanity.

The First Christmas retells the two-millennial story of Jesus’ birth from a unique perspective. It gives voices to the band of sheep herders that the angel of God chose to announce the miraculous birth of Christ. Shiloh, a shepherd boy, his father Arcturus, and fellow herders go to Bethlehem to find the newborn Savior. When astrologers from the East meet the shepherds, Shiloh is the perfect person to take them to honor the Christ child. Shiloh learns the meaning and magnitude of God’s gift to humankind.

    FINAL INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE INCARNATION

Human incarnation is the highest act of altruism a Salvarian achieves.

—Transition Minister of Caelum Salvari, Narrator

    ______________________________________________________________________

CAELUM SALVARI, A CELESTIAL REALM beyond Earth’s temporal dimension, will, in an hour, witness a new dawn rise over the Earth’s eastern hemisphere. The Transition Minister of Caelum Salvari passes through the Hall of Ascendance, undistracted by the reorientation activities there, and arrives at the Hall of Prosopopeia to address the day’s commencement assembly of 353,652 Earth-bound Salvarians.

"Congratulations Pre-Incarnates on your chosen endeavor! the Transition Minister conveys in frequencies beyond human hearing. Human incarnation is the highest act of altruism a Salvarian achieves. I sense the course module, Carnal Life on Planet Earth, has intensified your fascination with Earth’s creation and beauty; and with its inhabitants. Let me conclude your education with a review of the main challenges of mortality on Earth.

Everyone! Synthesize your conscious with mine for the remaining addendum, ‘Final Instructions before Incarnation.’

AS THE PRE-INCARNATES SYNCH consciousness, the telepathic projection or tele-projection melds with them, top, bottom, and throughout with wavelengths of energy in spectrums undetectable by human eyes. An encompassing view of the Milky Way galaxy shimmers and dilutes to a single star system; then a blue and white swirled planet afloat in empty blackness captures the focus. Earth. Its iridescent moon hangs close like a pearl at the end of an invisible cord. These holographic depictions are accompanied by music from the most notable symphonic composers known on Earth. Panoramas of the planet’s surface sweep by in review. The narrator begins:

Like all celestials of Caelum Salvari, you admire Earth’s beauty: its exquisite, powerful interaction of soaring, unpredictable skies over meandering rivers; and unfathomable, translucent oceans that rush upon its variegated landscapes. …

THE TELE-PROJECTION’S SCOPE is broad presenting Earth lifeforms: its plants, and its creatures from gigantic to microscopic, in the air and in the seas, and in all the places between.

A human couple ambles into the foreground. The tele-projection focuses on the woman, next the man; then dissolves into the supernal dimension of Caelum Salvari. In this otherworldly place, the tele-projection zooms in and magnifies human sperm cells swimming free in a life-promoting medium inside an amorphous beaker of light and energies. The narrator continues:

"Human beings have fascinated Salvarians since we infused our intellect into the DNA of ancient humans forty thousand Earth-years ago. We gave them the cerebral capacity to rise above other species, to create, to build and dominate their planet. The resultant sapient beings, however, were led by their innate drive for self-preservation, to reproduce, and regrettably, to dominate their neighbors.

Salvarian altruism and compassion couldn’t be infused into the reproductive cells of the advanced human, so Salvarians strive to circumvent human-inherent selfishness by volunteering to inhabit them. Honorable is your sacrifice to bring the will of the Omnipotent One to Earth. Your assignment is to cultivate love, goodness, and awareness inside the human soul so precious to the Omnipotent One. You are the messengers that elevate human consciousness to realize that mortal life is futile without awareness of the ethereal existence. This has been the mission of countless Pre-Incarnate Salvarians before you. …

THE PRE-DEPARTING CELESTIALS PAUSE to commemorate prior Salvarian messengers over the span of time from eons ago to the previous day:

"Through your guidance, your human host will accept the impermanence of visible life and contemplate an eternal invisible existence. You’ll indwell alongside its master-animator—the inbred, self-centered terrestrial spirit in the host that reflects the cumulative sum of the host’s life-experiences—good and bad. Help the master-animator achieve transcendence by encouraging it to connect with you. …"

THE TELE-PROJECTION MOVES ON and views poor and privileged couples engaged in the daily tasks of modern-day life. The projection pans the abdomens of the womenfolk. For each Pre-Incarnate, the women are significant because they are pregnant. For the first time, the Earth-destined Pre-Incarnates meet their unborn hosts inside the swelled wombs:

These Earth parents, indwelt by Salvarian emissaries like you, have conceived your human hosts. Their fetuses are near the last weeks of gestation. After today’s address, you’ll leave Caelum and enter the pre-born bodies of your assigned hosts—sooner, if for a physical reason the mother’s body starts the birth process prematurely. Under those circumstances, the Omnipotent One will maintain accord with you until all information you require is received. …

IN THE INSTANT IT TAKES the Omnipotent One to manifest a thought into existence, thousands of afterglows have already faded from the Hall of Prosopopeia, evidence that Pre-Incarnate Salvarians have left Caelum early for Earth. They’ll inhabit the firsts of over thirty-six thousand preemies born each day throughout the world. The narrator goes on:

"Encapsulated by your host’s flesh, you are separated from divine synchronicity with the Omnipotent One. Your Caelum Salvarian name will be forgotten, as it’s unpronounceable by human tongues, inaudible by human ears, and un-representable with written symbols. You’ll lose weightlessness and your trans-dimensional abilities. Inside the womb, the craving for space and freedom will grow irrepressible, causing the normal birth process to ensue. Birth into the world can be difficult and abrupt, but human fetuses are designed for it, though not all survive it. For fetuses whose development is prevented by disease or by medical intervention, their disjoined, unblemished master-animators are compassionately reintegrated into Earth’s creative cycle of renewal. …"

A MONTAGE OF NEWBORNS’ first cries is heard inside delivery rooms and inside autos; inside igloos, on dirt floors of huts, and in rice fields; in parking lots and in alleyways; in alabaster basins and inside tents at refugee camps. Their cries fill the collective consciousness of the Earth-destined entities:

"At birth, sounds and smells will bombard you. The sensations of mortal flesh can be so disturbing that new incarnates prompt their hosts to cry vehemently for the divine comfort of the Omnipotent One. You’ll finally settle for the warmth of your human mother, though incomparable to your waning memory of the Omnipotent One’s bosom.

"Like the Omnipotent One who apportioned its energy and assigned your purpose among the celestial citizens of Caelum Salvari, in secret, your host’s mother apportioned her flesh and bones that you’ll inhabit. For the first time, you’ll feel naked and cold and burdened by the weight of your infant body. Though you’ll feel weak and fragile, the human body is robust and wonderfully made. Yet, terrestrial flesh is imperfect. All of you will cope with physical challenges of various sorts and degrees; and for many of you, life-long inabilities. …"

A BACKDROP OF PARENTS, recent and experienced, representing all the peoples around the planet and every economic strata come into the Pre-Incarnates’ purview. Some are joyful, others are troubled:

Most of you will be fortunate to have competent birth parents to care for you. Foster mothers will care for you who suffer maternal death, abandonment, or have mothers unable to bond with their babies. Whoever your mother figure is, you’ll love her. She’ll be everything to you; and your father figure will be a great influence in your life, if his devotion to you remains uncompromised. …

THE FACES OF PARENTS and squirming infants dissolve into verdant pastures and vast grain fields. The tele-projection takes the Earth-destined celestials underground through an insect colony alive with the busyness of ants repairing tunnels after a rainstorm. Out and above ground again, the tele-projection ascends over broad savannahs roaming with elephants and giraffes. The expanse of blue sky slowly darkens until it’s punctured by stars:

The signals you send your host about your inner presence and extra-dimensional origins will be doubted by its master-animator. Yet, every cloud of rain, every blade of grass, and the tiniest to largest animals your host observes will help its master-animator discover the extra-dimensional reality of the Omnipotent One. If your host trusts your promptings, it will learn that human beings aren’t the lords of Earth, but its stewards. Your purpose is to encourage that understanding in the hearts and consciences of your hosts; and also radiate that to anyone else unaware. …

THE EFFUSION OF STARLIGHT brightens and spreads; the pastoral sky turns from night to dawn:

In Caelum Salvari, the personality assigned to you is fully realized and without selfish desire. You complement the personality of every other Salvarian. The result is a realm comprised of cooperation and harmony. On Earth, the first time your naive personality and desires clash with another—probably your mother—will be disconcerting. Your challenge is to encourage your host’s master-animator to be cognizant of the repercussions from its own desires and show consideration for its neighbors while striving to achieve personal desires. …

A KALEIDOSCOPE OF EARTH FACES transpose across the sky, expressing the range of human emotions from joy and contentment to despair. Varieties of human ideology rapidly bombard the Pre-Incarnates’ attention—democracy versus monarchy, autocracy and theocracy, freedom verses slavery. Each ideology contrasts respectful and abusive treatment of people by their governments:

"The challenges of your environment and interactions with other human beings cannot change the spiritual worthiness the Omnipotent One gave you. Physical differences or incapacities, however, may cause your host’s master-animator to perceive itself as diminished and feel insecure. Humans compensate for insecurities by either fostering cooperation or by exploiting others. Your task is to counter the negative ways humans compensate for their perceived inadequacies. For this reason, you and the master-animator will be at times in conflict. A well-integrated coexistence with the master-animator requires frequent self-examination and rededication to your mission.

"The most debilitating experience a human host can endure is chronic pain; be it physical pain or mental pain; and whether a consequence of gestation or injury, by participation in sports or in war as a soldier or noncombatant. Chronic pain can undermine your guidance to the host. Prolonged pain can dispirit you from your host. Whether the pain is caused by another’s abuse of the host’s inherent personhood and dignity or by the physical or psychological brutality from its environment or from events beyond its control, all pain assaults the master-animator. The master-animator will seek to stop its pain frequently by assuming behaviors detrimental to it or by succumbing to substance addiction. When a perilous or addicted life becomes ‘the pain’ to terminate, the master-animator will override the drive for self-preservation and compel its host to suicide. In the midst of incessant pain, early prompting of your host to seek all avenues of professional remedy will be crucial. When a situation is dire, it may help to manifest yourself in human form and let yourself be seen by your host—though this approach to reinforce your guidance requires extreme caution and care, as it can leave your host to cope with post-psychological disorientation. …"

THE PRE-INCARNATES DON’T KNOW PAIN and can’t conceive the depths of despair that a human conscience can fall to cause the host to commit an act contrary to the creative nature of the Omnipotent One.

Portraits of notable people come into the celestials’ perceptions: actors, musicians, pioneers of science and industry, and champions of social advancement; also images of notorious personalities in human history who’ve perpetrated injury, hate, and death on others:

"Human beings are attracted to what they perceive is lacking in themselves. Depending on your host’s celebrity, many people will praise and idolize it. The endowed talents of your host may cause some people to crave friendship from this personality. Envy may drive a few people to vilify, abuse, tyrannize, or even to murder your host.

The exploitation of one’s innate abilities for the exclusive benefit of oneself will lead a host to an assortment of narcissistic pitfalls that harden the heart and render your guidance null. A self-centered host is susceptible to become the conscienceless person who vilifies or abuses, tyrannizes or murders. If these egoists are parents, their children will despise them. …

IN THE HALL, CELESTIAL VIBRATIONS diminish to flaccid oscillations. The Pre-Incarnates perceive the state of being conscienceless unfathomable since the conditions that cause it don’t exist in Caelum Salvari:

Though you’ll keep your wisdom after you leave Caelum, human beings can be impulsive and stubborn. Most times, your host’s master-animator will ignore your guidance and make mistakes in judgement. Depending on the situation, you’ll witness your host be clever enough to create mountains out of molehills, if it satisfies its need to be heard or need for agreement. …

THE PRE-INCARNATES’ COLLECTIVE ENERGIES animate the Hall as images of couples around the globe are dressed in the traditional clothes of their cultures. They are showing affection, embracing, nuzzling noses, and kissing. Children enter the scene running about a school playground:

"The emotional human capability that mimics the love of the Omnipotent One is the depth of love for the children you conceive after coitus or for children you adopt as your own. They’ll be everything to you. In an enduring communal relationship, the joy of intimacy with your love-mate and raising your children in that love, will remind you of your Salvarian mission: to cultivate love, goodness, and awareness in the souls of human beings.

"Your Salvarian essence will be attracted to the Salvarian essence in another human, no matter the physical attributes. This sublime affinity between people called falling in love is closest to the enraptured love the Omnipotent One has for human beings. If your hosts’ master-animators are compatible, the love-attraction between the two of you will grow from infatuation to conscientious regard. …"

PASTORAL LANDSCAPES AND FRUITED MEADOWS shift to arenas of athletic fields, to song artists, pop bands, and symphonic orchestras on stage; then to diverse persuasions of public devotional services:

"Your human host may seek music and worship to express or heighten its mood; and when your host rejoices, even if burdened by pain and infirmity, you’ll feel lifted.

"You won’t depart Caelum unequipped. You’ll incarnate with the quiver of traits the Omnipotent One gave you at the time of your apportionment. Human beings call them talents or gifts. The purest, most powerful and transparent gift in your quiver is the capacity to love. Love can prompt your host to act with immediacy to right a wrong, to make another feel whole or to protect another from injury or humiliation; or love can prompt your host to risk itself for a loved one or neighbor.

"Yet, humans can be challenged to love one another despite the myriad of ways to give it: healing love for the wounded, abused, and fearful; charitable love for the needy; fraternal love for the lonely; renewing love for the apathetic; consoling love for the brokenhearted; guiding love for the lost; forgiving love for the culpable; courageous love, especially in the midst of hatred and atrocity; and an accepting love for oneself when they feel undeserved.

To know the all-encompassing mercy of the Omnipotent One, your host must learn that love isn’t sustainable without forgiveness. A host’s incapacity to love is a perilous human condition. …

COOPERATIVE ACTIVITIES PROJECTED in previous scenes morph to historical events exposing human fallibility and the resultant loss of lives caused by ignorance and negligence, by heinous acts of the deranged, by environmental illnesses
