The Robinsons moved in on Friday, and Cora didn’t see any reason to have supper with them and wasn’t interested in meeting any new people. She had her animals. They had lived there seven years, and each year there was more. Now she had three horses, four dogs, two cats, rabbits, geese, a barn owl, and a porcupine. Cora was studying to be a veterinarian, and they were all rescue animals. Her mother said, while making two casseroles that they had a son and daughter about her age, but Cora wanted to stay home. It was a custom to bring food to new neighbors, so they wouldn’t have to cook during the unpacking and getting settled in.

Cora came down stairs wearing a clean pair of bib coveralls. Her mother told her to go back and put on a dress, but Cora felt they didn’t need to impress them. Her mother gave her that look, and she went back up and changed putting on a dress. It was a one-piece flowered dress, long sleeved, that went down almost to ankles and buttoned around the neck.

They lived in a rural area. It wasn’t a farm but each lot was two to three acres. There were woods between the properties.
