About this ebook
When a murder echoing a fifteen-year-old cold case rocks the Southern town of Savannah, crime reporter Harper McClain risks everything to find the identity of this calculated killer in Christi Daugherty's new novel The Echo Killing.
A city of antebellum architecture, picturesque parks, and cobblestone streets, Savannah moves at a graceful pace. But for Harper McClain, the timeless beauty and culture that distinguishes her home’s Southern heritage vanishes during the dark and dangerous nights. She wouldn’t have it any other way. Not even finding her mother brutally murdered in their home when she was twelve has made her love Savannah any less.
Her mother’s killer was never found, and that unsolved murder left Harper with an obsession that drove her to become one of the best crime reporters in the state of Georgia. She spends her nights with the police, searching for criminals. Her latest investigation takes her to the scene of a homicide where the details are hauntingly familiar: a young girl being led from the scene by a detective, a female victim naked and stabbed multiple times in the kitchen, and no traces of any evidence pointing towards a suspect.
Harper has seen all of this before in her own life. The similarities between the murder of Marie Whitney and her own mother’s death lead her to believe they’re both victims of the same killer. At last, she has the chance to find the murderer who’s eluded justice for fifteen years and make sure another little girl isn’t forever haunted by a senseless act of violence—even if it puts Harper in the killer’s cross-hairs…

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5If the other adult books to come from Ms. Daugherty are like this one, then, I can't wait. Instantly, I connected with the characters as well as the storyline. Harper McClain is a strong female lead. Plus, she is the type of woman I imagine when I picture a crime reporter...fearless, stubborn like a bulldog, quick thinker, and always gets her story. Although, she is lucky to have a great cohort in her cameraman, Miles. Miles has some good resources, willing to get into danger with Harper, and Harper and he make a great team. Finally, I can't forget to mention mystery man and possible love interest, Luke Walker. There is a lot about Luke that was barely revealed. I can't wait to get to know more about Luke as well as I hope to see him more in future books. Harper and Luke's current relationship status is "it's complicated". Make sure that The Echo Killing is on your list to read for 2018. You don't want to miss this book!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The Echo Killing strikes a perfect balance between characterization, plot, and setting. I loved Harper's character. She's young, independent, and tough as nails when necessary, but also sensitive and, at times, vulnerable. Her character comes alive in this story, as if she could step off the pages and go about her day in the world. The supporting and minor characters are all well developed, each with their own quirks that make them unique individuals. The plot starts as a slow burn, gradually building until I became as obsessed as Harper in finding answers. The whodunit aspect is not obvious, and we have a couple great twists. The author's own experience as a crime reporter adds an extra layer of insight and realism to this story. The Savannah setting comes alive. Rather than the usual southern charm of this type of setting, instead we see the dark edginess hidden in the shadowy night. I normally want closure in a book, even when it's part of a series. Cliffhangers irritate me, at best. This book does have a bit of a cliffhanger ending, but I didn't sputter and complain. (Okay, maybe I did, but just a little.) For the most part, this story stands on its own. The crux of the plot is resolved, and we're left with a couple of loose threads to be pulled in book two. You could read this book on its own and be satisfied.*I received an advance copy from the publisher, via Amazon Vine, in exchange for my honest review.*
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5OH BOY OH BOY OH BOY!!!! What a thrill ride! I will tell you that it did take a bit of commitment to get into the book. Once I hit about the half-way point, I needed to hold on to my hat.
I will be looking for more of Harper McClain in the future.
My thanks to netgalley and Minotaur Books for this advanced readers copy. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Great first book. Can’t wait for the next one in the series!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5True to my nature I read the second of this series first so I knew who the killer was from the start. It really didn’t bother me because I enjoyed the adventure of finding out the how and the why of Harper’s mother’s murder. There remain so many unanswered questions in both this one and the second book…that you know that there will be more great books in this series. Oh…and the character of Detective Luke Wells is worth the time to read these books.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A very promising start to a new series. I really look forward to reading the upcoming books in this series.
