About this ebook
“G. M. Malliet has crafted the English village of our dreams.” —Charlaine Harris
Agatha Award-winning author G. M. Malliet has charmed mystery lovers and cozy fans with her critically acclaimed mysteries. In Prior's Wood, featuring handsome spy-turned-cleric Max Tudor, won’t disappoint.
Newly returned from investigating a murder in Monkslip-super-Mare, handsome Max Tudor wants nothing more than to settle back into his predictable routine as vicar of St. Edwold’s Church in the village of Nether Monkslip. But the flow of his sermon on Bathsheba is interrupted when the lady of the local manor house is found in a suicide pact with her young lover.
Lady Duxter’s husband rallies quickly from the double tragedy—too quickly, it is murmured in the village. Lord Duxter already has offered his manor house to a motley crew of writers, including Max’s wife Awena, for his writers’ retreat, and he insists the show must go on.
When a young girl goes missing and a crime writer becomes a target, DCI Cotton asks Max to lend his MI5 expertise to the investigation.
Many suspects emerge as the scope of the investigation widens beyond the writers to villagers who had crossed swords with the insufferably smug crime author. But Max begins to wonder: was the attack on the writer only part of a broader conspiracy of silence?

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Max Tudor, an Anglican priest married to a Wiccan, is also a former MI5 officer. Settled now in the small town of Monkslip, Max finds himself involved in another investigation into a death in his area. A man and a woman, are apparently the victims of a suicide pact (only half successful...the woman has survived). But everything is not as it seems, and Max listens and observes and is able to not only solve the mystery, but save another life. An interesting mystery set in a quirky English village, this is a lovely cozy mystery series.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5No. 7 in the Father Max Tudor (formerly of MI5) mystery series, is an enjoyable and relaxing read. Father Max is drawn into another local investigation - this time peeling back the the layers on what appears to be a murder-suicide. Doth the grieving widow/step-mom protesteth too much? This story played out more in the mind and not so much with action scenes. It certainly was a good and most enjoyable book.Synopsis:Newly returned from investigating a murder in Monkslip-super-Mare, handsome Max Tudor wants nothing more than to settle back into his predictable routine as vicar of St. Edwold’s Church in the village of Nether Monkslip. - Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I have enjoyed this series since the beginning, but this book lacked the panache of the earlier books. The author spent too much time describing each thought and action, that when an event happened, the reader had lost track of the event. I love the characters, but even the characters showed flatness and dullness. The book fell into such blandness, that not a scene remains in my memory. This could possibly be the demise of Max Tudor as future reading for me.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This is a fun English mystery. Max Tudor is a former spy turned cleric. He is a cleric in a small town and seems to run in to murders. The characters were all good. I really like his Wiccan wife. They work very well together. I really enjoy small town mysteries. I hope to read some of the prior books in this series. You don’t need to read any of the previous books to get caught up in the story. I received a copy of this book from St.Martin’s Press and Netgalley for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Not my favorite in the Max Tudor series set in the English village of Nether Monkslip, but still a good one! The audiobook narrator is great with the different characters' voices. Like an Agatha Christie village mystery (but with much more character developement) the books in this series aren't quite cozies, but aren't quite NOT cozies, either. (This is #7, so don't start with this one.)
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5IN PRIOR’S WOOD: A MAX TUDOR MYSTERY is written by G. M. Malliet. This title is Book #7 of the Max Tudor Mystery series.Max Tudor, a retired MI5 agent, is a parochial vicar at St. Etwold’s Parish in Nether Monkslip. All thoughts of putting his past behind him and enjoying the tranquil life of an Anglican ‘priest’ is soon put to rest, as he is called upon to help investigate and solve several local murder cases with DCI Cotton.IN PRIOR’S WOOD, the lady of the local manor house is found in a suicide pact with her (supposed) young lover.I like the writing, the plots, the interesting and complex characters, and the locations. I like that there is a map of Nether Monkslip and a cast of characters. I also like the way past history is brought up in the context of the current case. ****
