The Conqueror - Tracy Lee Harrington

    The Valley Of Hearts

One dark rainy day in May 2017 Tristan Banks was sitting on her window seat looking out at the bleak, dreary sky. Hearing a gentle scratching sound from somewhere under her bed, she just sighed and continued gazing out at the night sky. The grandfather clock chimed sweetly in the hall. The house was old, the scratching sound was probably her cat Caesar chasing a mouse again. But the sound grew louder and louder, and then a red light that filtered out from under the bed.

Tristan walked over to the bed slowly. She carefully got on her knees and peeked under her bed. In the far corner she

spotted something red and furry looking. Caesar must have lost one of his toys under there she thought to herself. She placed the blanket back down and rose to her feet, as she saw her cat crouched down on his front paws about to attack a cricket. That poor little cricket, Tristan thought out loud and sighed. Tristan walked across the room and went over to pat Caesar.

He was purring very loudly and for a brief moment he was enjoying the attention. Caesar snapped to

attention as the cricket jumped across the floor and he went leaping after it. Tristan laughed so hard her sides ached and she saw Cesare land on the cricket. It was a very hot and humid summer night and the sweat was rolling down her face. She wiped her forehead and longed for a cool summer breeze to come through the open window. Tristan ambled back over to the window seat and sat down again. She glanced over at the small wall with the hope chest against it. On the wall, rainbow patterns in the shape of hearts were dancing! The patterns grew larger by the minute and there a strong wind suddenly blew right into the room.

The heart-shaped creatures shined like a giant prism hanging from a chandelier in the sunlight. The room began to spin and Tristan felt dizzy. She became sick to her stomach and she remembered why she did not like spinning rides at the amusement park. A red furry heart-shaped creature crawled out from underneath the bed.

Tristan’s eyes were glittering from excitement and her jaw hung open. The creature jumped up on the bed and looked at her for a moment, then in a sing-song voice he said, My name is Heart Song. I am from The Valley of Hearts. The reason I am here is I need you to go on a mission with me. Tristan looked like she’d just seen a ghost in her room.

The creature continued speaking. I need your help to rescue the creatures and humans from The Castel of Anxiety.

I can’t rescue anyone, she said as she giggled loudly and just stared at the heart shaped creature.

The creature cleared his throat and continued. If you fail in your quest they will remain monsters forever.

The heart shape creatures that were dancing on all the walls in her room repeated everything Heart Song said. This made Tristan giggle a little. She could tell Heart Song was getting frustrated, as the vines were showing up on his face.

What can I do for them? I am just a girl, she said.

Heart Song looked at Tristan with big eyes then laughed. You are the Conqueror and you my dear girl are going to need a lot of training, he said in a melodious voice.

Tristan had a blank look on her face. Heart Song ignored the look on her face and told her about the place they had to go to.

We will have to crawl under your bed and look for a trap door; it will magically appear.

Tristan mockingly said, A magical door under my bed will just appear and you expect me to believe in these things you are telling me.

Heart Song just smiled at her and said, Yes I do, and are you ready my dear girl?

TRISTAN DID NOT ANSWER. Heart Song continued on in excitement. Oh, you will be given a bow and arrow for a weapon and you will have to learn to use it. Later on you will have a dagger and a sword. I will have you suited for armor and a shield. Do you have any questions?

Tristan thought to herself this creature talks more than I do. Tristan just stood there looking at Heart Song like a frozen iceberg.

We are wasting time, are you coming with me or not?

I am coming, Tristan replied scratching her head. She followed slowly behind this gabbing creature and it brought back memories of her childhood friend Timothy. She had not given him a passing thought until now and she realized she missed him. Heart Song could read her thoughts but her did not want her to know he could do this.

What is your name my dear girl?

    My name is Tristan.

Well, Tristan, are you in or out?

    I am in, she said.

Good, I am glad you are going to join me.

Tristan just stared at him. She could not believe that she was talking to a heart creature! The first lesson you need to learn is gaining the Creature's trust. Do you understand me, Tristan?

Tristan's mind was spinning, she still could not believe her eyes and she wondered if she was dreaming. Heart Song broke through her thoughts. Please do not stare at the creatures like you are staring at me right now. Heart Song was doing everything he could to hide his feeling of frustration with her and it was hard enough that he had to verbally communicate with her. He hoped she would learn their ways quickly. Heart Song flew off the bed and a beautiful trail of color followed him. The room filled up with more heart-shaped fuzzy singing creatures. In a blink of the eye, the creatures disappeared into a large glow of rainbow-colored lights.

Heart Song grabbed Tristan’s hand and they crawled under her bed. It was hot and stuffy under the bed. Tristan stumbled into Heart Song.  He laughed so hard he finally composed himself. Under the bed was dusty and cramped.

Tristan's head was swimming so much with all that was happening and she could not believe her eyes. Close your eyes, Tristan, Heart Song commanded. Tristan obeyed and she closed her eyes and she felt like she was going to play a game of hide and seek. The floor under them began to shake and crack like an earthquake. Tristan could hear her lamp from her dresser fall to the floor. Before she knew it the shaking stopped and all was quiet. In the silence a door just appeared. Heart Song shouted at her, Open your eyes, Tristan, we are now ready to go!

Tristan opened her eyes and saw the small trap door in the floor. it was glittering. How am I going to fit through that door? she muttered.

You think too much with your head and not with your heart, Heart Song replied with a sad look on his face. Take my hand and believe in the magic of love.

Tristan grabbed his small hand in a flash of colored lights, Heart Song and Tristan were transported through the small door.

Tristan glanced over her shoulder and saw the small door disappearing behind her. Under her feet there was nothing but darkness and hideous screaming and an awful smell that made her sick to her stomach. The smell and the awful sound faded. Tristan, could hear the rush of flapping wings in the darkness. Heart Song, where are you?

HE DID NOT RESPOND. In the darkness, she could feel extreme heat and the smell of sulfur. She was face to face with an angry looking creature . Tristan felt a scream coming but it was trapped in her throat. Relax, Tristan, a soft voice came out of darkness. A soft light pierced through the dark blanket of darkness. In the dim light, Tristan could see Heart Song sitting on an enormous creature that had the head of a Chameleon lizard and his body was covered in fur; he also had a body of a Siamese cat with white wings. The wings looked like they were from a Pegasus. Heart Song yelled at the creature. The creature was snorting and blasting fire from his mouth right at Tristan's face. The creature reluctantly back up from her.

The look on Tristan's face was of horror. Heart Song spoke to Tristan, saying, This creature is the last of its kind. He is a Wind Fire Storm Creature .

She felt like she was going to pass out or worse, wet herself from fear. In an angry voice, she demanded to know what was

    happening.

There was no response. The seconds passed like an eternity. Through the defining silence Heart Song’s voice thundered, Patience, you need patience and you have to learn to trust me. Tristan’s heart was pounding so loud in her ears it felt like it would blow up. When her heart finally calmed down her mind felt clear and she was fearless. Heart Song’s voice finally softened. "You will learn I can read your heart and thoughts.  Let me introduce you to my companion Wisdom. He was from the Land Ends Way.

"He is the last of his kind. The land was destroyed. He has four abilities that I know of.

"The first ability is to smash through dark spells. The second ability is he can use the power of thought communication and the third ability he can do is  change into any object or person.  The last ability which I think is very important is that he can see things before they happen.

HIS FAVORITE WEAPONS are shooting fire out of his mouth and sometimes just ice. He is very mischievous and adventurous.

Tristan stretched and grumbled, This going to be a long trip.   Wisdom gave Fearless a look and Fearless just nodded her head. Heart Song knew what they were thinking. Heart Song looked annoyed and continued talking, Under you, Tristan, is your champion Fearless. Fearless was a giant dragonfly, she had huge rainbow wings that glow in the dark; her body was the color of the ocean. Her eyes were the color of fire. Fearless gazed back at Tristan. She was smiling and her red eyes were dancing. Heart Song continued, Fearless has one flaw, she will stop flying if she senses fear from you.

Tristan’s mind was drifting in boredom and she wondered if he would take a breath between sentences. He noticed the look Fearless gave Heart Song. Fearless yawned loudly and Heart Song pretended he didn't see it. Heart Song told Tristan, You will be an apprentice. Fearless is your companion for now and when you are done training you will have a choice between Fearless or Wisdom. I would not mind if you choose Wisdom.

The dragonfly purred in excitement at the thought of Heart Song being on her back. Wisdom shot him a dirty look. Heart Song just patted his head and Wisdom gave him a playful smile. Heart Song cleared his throat and continued speaking. Fearless was from the land Leaf Tale, she like Wisdom is the last of her kind.  Fearless has the ability to take away fear and she also can paralyze with crippling fear anyone who refuses the truth. She also can look into the eyes of a creature or person and she can see if they have a wicked heart.  She also has the power of thought communication. Fearless is very loyal and strong.

Heart Song moved Wisdom with great authority away from Tristan's face. Wisdom seemed to calm down and he was now

contented. Tristan could hear him purring like a cat as they

    flew.

Does Wisdom have any flaws, Heart Song?"

Wisdom turned his head towards her and smiled.  Heart Song quietly giggled and said, No, he has no flaws, he is loyal to the end. Heart Song was talking for a long time but nobody was listening anymore. Wisdom was wondering if anyone was feeling annoyed like he was. He giggled to himself; for someone who didn't like verbal communication he seemed to be enjoying himself. Wisdom glanced over at Tristan and he noticed the annoyed look on her face. He could hear her thoughts and they were about how she wished he’d stop talking. She was not the only one who felt this way, he was sure Fearless felt the same way. Heart Song ignored Wisdom and Tristan's thoughts and continued speaking. The valley is just below us. Stay away from the Peaceful Slumber Wildflowers they will put you into a trance the smell from them is inviting.  The cure is a gross mixture of the venom of the deadly slime worms and the person or creature must be immersed in a barrel full of the venom.

Tristan asked Heart Song how many slime worms would you have to kill to fill one barrel?

Heart Song said, "Just one worm is all you need,
