Cindy A Christiansen

Bestselling author, Cindy A Christiansen, has combined her love of dogs with her joy of writing to create an award-winning combination. Her novels always include canine characters both in the pages and on the cover, an extension of the credit she gives to her extraordinary rescue dogs for their part in helping her overcome numerous challenges. In a reciprocal gesture for their love and devotion, a portion of the proceeds from her books are donated to assist abandoned and abused dogs. She lives in Utah with her loving husband, two creative children with autism, and a pack of rambunctious dogs. Here's what her books give you: A clean read with no bedroom scenes or offensive language; a tantalizing, fast-paced plot; a story without a lot of boring description; down-to-earth heroes and heroines with everyday jobs; a rollercoaster ride of emotions you face right along with the characters; a special dog to steal your heart; a few added facts, a good message, and that important happily-ever-after ending.

    Chapter One

SKYE RIDGEMONT BOLTED to a standing position from her leather desk chair, absolutely furious at the attorney rambling on at the other end of the phone call. Lawsuit? Seriously? Against her? His clients were out of their minds!

She paced her law office, trying to run her fingers through her long, curly locks as she usually did when she was upset or angry. Her hair was swept up in a French twist for her earlier court appearance, and all she managed to do was pull out a lock that kept falling across her vision. She let out a sigh.

Mr. Port— Yes, but... Mr. Porter. Would you please listen to me? Mr. Port— Oh, for heaven’s sake. She slammed down the receiver, but the phone immediately rang again. Caller ID informed her it was Mr. Porter again. She refused to answer. He was a less-than-honest ambulance chaser with a bad reputation in town. Being hung up on was probably a way of life for the man. Nothing seemed to faze him, anyway. Skye pulled a bobby pin from her hair and tried to reclaim the loose lock.

Her assistant, and soon to be partner, Vera, drudged into her office. She looked overheated and bedraggled in her silk, pink blouse and gray skirt. Rough day? she asked.

You can say that again, Skye said, fanning her face with a file folder.

Vera dropped into one of the two chairs opposite of Skye’s side of the mahogany desk and put her stockinged feet in the other. I’m afraid it’s not about to get better, Vera said, moaning. They’re not coming to fix the air conditioning for at least three days. That’s the quickest I could get an appointment in the whole valley. I even checked with HVAC companies in Mesquite.

Three days? Skye wailed. In this hundred-degree weather? You think they would plan for this kind of extreme conditions here in St. George in July.

They do, but the elderly, hospitals and care centers take priority.

Well, that’s everyone but me and you in this city, Skye said, chuckling.

Vera pulled out her folding fingernail file and began sanding away. So, what did Mr. Porter have to say?

The children of Mrs. Braithwaite are suing me over her estate. They feel that she was incompetent at the time of her trust, despite her videotaped will, her MoCA testing and her doctor’s written statement of sound mind. We covered all the bases and the greedy brats are still fighting over every last dollar. She sat down and picked up her glass of water that was already lukewarm. She disliked tepid water, but their ice machine couldn’t keep up with the demand. She took a small sip and set it down with a frown.

Greedy brats. Vera smiled. How old are they now? Sixties? Seventies?

Skye scoffed. They are still greedy brats. Maybe if even one of them had cared for her in her old age, she would have left them something. Instead, she chose to leave her millions to an obscure medical research group.

Aren’t most of her kids dead or in nursing homes? Vera grinned, pleased with herself.

You know what I mean. Mrs. Braithwaite said none of her children had helped her in their adult lives. ‘Take, take, take,’ were her exact words. Seven out of the eleven are still alive.

Vera looked over the top of her purple-framed glasses at her, still filing her nails. Are you ready for the next news?

Not really. Someone left a dent in my car door at the courthouse without leaving their name. Now, I’m being sued, the heat is unbearable and I’m exhausted and achy from that 5K run in Moab over the weekend. She rubbed her sore knee. Cranky is the word for the day.

Well, you received a call from your Aunt Daisy while you were out. You forgot to turn your cell phone back on again after court. Apparently, she’s tried to call you all morning.

Skye grabbed for her cell, knocking over her glass of water. It quickly pooled into the lap of her linen, royal blue skirt. Luckily, she managed to scoop up her phone before it got soaked. She groaned, but the water actually felt good in this heat. She slipped off her suit jacket to expose her sleeveless, scoop-neck, white silk-chiffon top. That felt better. She slipped the jacket around the back of her chair and wiped at her skirt.

Vera rushed out for paper towels while Skye checked her phone messages.

Yes, Aunt Daisy had called ten times so far today. Skye always turned off the sound when she headed for court or was driving. Remembering to turn it back on was one of her biggest faults.

Are you going to call? Vera asked, walking back in and wiping up the water.

She’s never called in the last three years I’ve been here. Something must be up. Did she say it was urgent?

"No, but she sounded very hesitant, and there were
