World War II is over. Will returning home be its own war?

Louise has been passed from one relative to another for years. Now, World War II has ended, she's ready to graduate high school and wants to escape to Salt Lake City, Utah on her own. That is, until she meets Danny who has just returned from the Philippines.

Danny longed for two years to return to his small home town. Now that he's home, nothing feels the same. He finds himself wishing for more out of life than working his family's farm and turning his money over to his parents.

When friends decide to elope to Las Vegas, Danny and Louise find themselves along for the ride. With very few possessions, little money and limited jobs after the war, the two struggle to build a future with only their love, friends, optimism and faith.

    Prologue

    3 MAY 1946

Danny stepped down from the 1943 Ford pickup and gave the driver a wave. He slung his duffel bag over his shoulder for the lengthy walk the rest of the way home down dirt roads. Hitchhiking hadn’t been easy all the way from San Francisco to his small hometown in central Utah. He’d walked much of the way. But, after a two-year stint in the navy as a Coxswain over in the Philippines, it had been a breeze. He liked the feel of the earth beneath him.

He smiled, remembering the incident with his commander in the bird’s nest of the ship. He’d had his buddy smuggle him out a half of a potato from the galley because he so longed to see something green after months at sea. He planted it in a jar, using toothpicks and water. After hearing rumors, his commander had actually climbed up to the bird’s nest to see for himself. He’d taken one look at the small seedling blossoming and cursed under his breath—Damn farmer.

Danny huffed a breath, grinned, and repositioned his heavy pack. Two years. He hadn’t seen his family or home in all that time. The mail had always been months behind once he received it. Anything could have happened by now. What would he find at home? Would everyone be healthy and safe? He should have called, but he couldn’t afford the long-distance phone charge. He wasn’t the same young man he’d been right after high school when he’d signed up. He had never been anywhere outside of his rural community before the war.

Now he’d seen foreign lands, met different nationalities, learned extreme discipline the hard way, met women he had only heard about in the movies and witnessed death firsthand. He shuddered at the memories. He’d met good men... Made a few friends... Witnessed cowards... Dealt with bullies... Felt bone-rattling fear... Drank alcohol for the first time... Really learned what it meant to count on someone else with your life... Watched as the war destroyed some men’s minds... Fought to keep alive and not lose his own mind... Witnessed mutilated and dead bodies... Saw some men grow strong... Some weak...

Danny wasn’t the same man walking back to his home town, and he never would be. The nightmares he continued to have proved that. And the mysterious illness he had contracted over in the Islands that the doctors couldn’t diagnose also plagued him. No, he would never be the same. Would the horrible visions ever stop? Would loud sounds continue to cripple him? Would his feet ever look like nothing more than peeled flesh? He kicked a rock and took a deep breath of newly mown alfalfa. What lies in store for his future after all of that?

He noticed a black and white, four-legged creature barreling down the road toward him in the distance? Could it be? Rustler? How on earth would their Australian Cattle dog know he was coming home? Of course, Rustler had always had some sort of intuition. He had guided them to where his little sister had fallen off her bicycle and cut her knee on more than one occasion. How did Rustler know these things? Danny couldn’t have even predicted when he would be arriving home. Rustler was a regular Lassie. And, it wasn’t like home was just around the corner. He still had two miles to go. He heard a high-pitched, guttural cry from the dog as he sped toward Danny.

Atta boy, Rust, he said, dropping his pack.

The dog, letting out another cry, leapt into his arms and took them backward onto the dirt road. They wrestled around, Danny’s white uniform getting covered in dust.

Did ya miss me, boy? Man, did I miss you. He ruffled the dog’s coat repeatedly, swatting at him playfully.

Rustler licked him, whined and nibbled gently at his face with his front teeth. After a few more minutes of rowdiness, Danny hopped to his feet and tried to brush himself off. Rustler dashed down the road, looking back as if to say, Follow me. I’ll take you the rest of the way home.

    Chapter One

    20 MAY 1946

Danny drove the hoe hard into the soil and chopped the weeds off at the roots. He stood up straight and stretched his back, leaning against the hoe and staring at the blisters on the palms of his hands. Sweat rolled down his forehead and into his eyes, stinging sweetly. He yanked off his straw cowboy hat and wiped his face on the sleeve of his forearm.

It hadn’t taken long for his dad to put him to work in the fields; only a couple of days, actually. He’d been working alongside him for the last two weeks. Danny had been shocked at the sight of his folks his first day back. They looked older and withered like the strains of the war and life had taken a toll on their bodies. His father appeared shorter than the man he had known. His weathered, tanned face had permanent frown lines embedded throughout. His square jaw now sagged and what Danny thought was once upturned crinkles at the corner of his eyes now ran
