Chapter 1

I wasn't at all sure why she was on my mind lately but she was. She was right in the forefront of my mind. They say first loves are never truly forgotten and Susan Brock had been my first love. Maybe my only love.

I'm Mathew Brown and Susan Brock and I were the perfect high school couple. We began to date steadily when she was barely sixteen and I almost eighteen. It was said where you saw one of us the other one wasn't far away.

It was the first time for either of us when we had sex. After the first time there were many more times that we enjoyed one another's bodies. During the first month of training I almost quit but in addition to being big and strong I was more than a little stubborn. If I had quit I would have in the eighty-five percent dropout the SEAL command figured on. SEALs are made up of the best the Marine Corp and Navy have to offer.

After the first month while the training didn't become easier but it became bearable. I was surprised to discover the training never stopped. There was always another level ahead. It was for the most part mission, a brief rest period, more training and another mission.

I had reached the chief petty officers grade after only eight years. Then just before my ten year anniversary an operation went terribly wrong and I was badly hurt. As bad as my wounds were I was one of the few that made it out alive. The two uninjured SEALs carried me to the pick-up point and the three of us were extracted. Another team was immediately sent in to recover the bodies of the five that had been killed because we do not leave any behind.

I learned later that I had been hit five times but luckily all were small arms fire. The doctors at the naval hospital told me that one or two or maybe even three of the wounds wouldn't have eliminated me from combat duty but the totality of wounds did.

Sixty days later I was a civilian. I received a cigar box full of metals and a medical but honorable discharge and a plane ticket to my home of record.

Long before my discharge I tried to convince the medical team that I was fit and able to carry on. I demonstrated my strength and abilities to no avail. Somewhere up the chain of command a decision had been reached and no matter how many push-ups, sit-ups, or how far and fast I ran I couldn't change their minds.

Fuck it! I said aloud as the plane touched down at the Capitol City international airport. Nearly home and the word sounded strange to me. My parents were both dead. That tragic accident happened just before I joined the Navy. I had no close relatives living there so why had I come home? A question I had asked several times as I traveled.
