ABOUT THE PULSE
The Pulse of Blue Blood is a short story meant to be read AFTER you read My Blood Runs Blue. In this short story, you will learn more about the relationship between Calista, Julian and Alexander. You’ll get a chance to see how Calista confused Julian’s need to find Damon with the devastation that occurs when she does run across him.
This is a short story.
CHAPTER ONE
CALISTA
Istood at the window over the kitchen sink, watching Julian and Anastasia play outside in the twilight while I prepared her dinner, and our breakfast. It was strange to have a five-year-old child that followed a human schedule when you were a vampire and needed to live the life of a nocturnal creature.
During the day, Anastasia spent most of her time with a nanny. Not that we didn’t want to spend the day with her, but because we couldn’t go out in the sun, and she could. Julian and I wanted her to have as normal a life as we could give her, and having a nanny, like most other vampire parents, was the best way to do it.
We spent our mornings and evenings together, and during the day, Anastasia would go to preschool and spend time with friends. We were lucky to have a wonderful young lady who knew about us that looked after her and gave Anastasia all the love that she needed during the day.
At night after Anastasia was in bed, Julian would head to work, and I would, well, I’d try to stay busy. That usually meant that I hung around with my best friend, Gina Marie. Well, I did when she wasn’t with her own mate, Brendon. She met him and mated with him about a year after I mated with Julian.
I smiled as Anastasia chased after her father in the backyard. I loved hearing her laugh and the joy she carried with her when she was around. I sighed; she was the best thing to come out of my mating with Julian.
It wasn’t that I didn’t love Julian, I did, with every fiber of my being, but there was something missing. I tried to pin the blame on the fact that I was bored. It was hard to find any good type of work for a woman on a night shift. Of course, a lot of things had changed for women over the last decade, but even now in the seventies, there wasn’t much we could do at night.
The worst part of being a vampire was that the stores and everything else were closed. Maybe you’d find a movie theater playing a late night movie, but those hours after midnight and sunrise were boring.
Recently, Julian seemed withdrawn and I wasn’t exactly sure of the cause of that. It could have been me, or it could have been work. It was more likely because of Alexander.
I winced as I thought of him. Since the day that Julian and I had mated, Alex had refused to speak with me. I had tried many times to talk to him and explain what had happened, but he would never listen.
Thirteen months after Julian and I mated, Alex became the head of the VMF. Now Julian worked for him, instead of with him. Not that they had worked together after we had mated. Oh, hell no! Alexander had immediately put in a request to work with anyone but Julian.
I know that Julian missed working with Alexander. They had been best friends before we went behind Alex’s back and hooked up one night. Julian and I hadn’t even known each other the night we came together. Both of us were feeding off an intense chemical reaction that intensified when we touched. Basically, I wanted him like I’d never wanted another man before, and he had felt the same.
Our mating had been quick and dirty, without any words or discussion. One moment we were kissing under the stars outside the VMF house and the next moment we were having sex on top of his Mustang. I often wondered what my life would be like if we hadn’t shared blood that night while we were having sex.
If that hadn’t happened, I have no doubt that I would be with Alex now. I’d been in love with him, and we’d been seeing each other for over a year, although we’d never had sex together. We’d had some pretty hot make-out sessions, but never sex. Alex believed in waiting, and knowing he was going to be the Master of the VMF, made him extra careful. He needed to make sure that the woman by his side was strong, intelligent and could handle all that came with the position. I had wanted to be that woman for him and work at his side to police our breed.
I clamped my teeth down on my bottom lip as I turned from the window and began to mix the batter for pancakes. At the time that I met Julian, I was getting tired of waiting for Alex to come
