Drugs & Dinner
The sun had only set an hour ago, but everything outside the quaint diner seemed abnormally dark. It was like the stars had forgotten about the town.
Middle of nowhere, that’s where we are,
Trey said, pulling the door open and standing to the side. The rusty little bell over the top of the door dinged, holding a melodic hum as two women and four men filed in military style.
A few locals ensconced in their booths turned lazy eyes toward the group as they seated themselves, taking the largest booth against the far wall.
Hell yes. Drugs and breakfast!
Ezra said, snatching up a laminated menu.
Alexia scowled at the menu. Pinching the bridge of her slender nose, she said, I’m knackered. Let’s just get some of this pie and get back to the motel. We have a lot to discuss.
She looked up, hazel irises skipping around the gaunt faces of the patrons. They looked how she felt: exhausted.

Alexia nudged Davis and pointed across the diner at an old jukebox.
Davis nodded once and slid out. The group exchanged glances.
So what’s everyone having?
Ezra said, his face still hidden behind the plastic menu.
You came! And you brought your friends!
The familiar cheery voice made Ezra flip down the menu. It was the bright-eyed redheaded girl he’d met earlier at the motel.
Gabriella?
he mumbled like a love-drunk teenager.
That’s right,
she said and scrunched up her nose. So, what can I get you guys? Lemme guess, some of our world-famous, delicious apple pie.
A smoke,
Trey said flatly and stood up.
Ezra smiled apologetically.
Trey glided toward the door, his hand groping at his jacket for the Rhode Island killing sticks. On the table by door was a half-eaten piece of pie. Trey paused, looked around, shrugged,
