    Drugs & Dinner

The sun had only set an hour ago, but everything outside the quaint diner seemed abnormally dark. It was like the stars had forgotten about the town.

Middle of nowhere, that’s where we are, Trey said, pulling the door open and standing to the side. The rusty little bell over the top of the door dinged, holding a melodic hum as two women and four men filed in military style.

You came! And you brought your friends!

The familiar cheery voice made Ezra flip down the menu. It was the bright-eyed redheaded girl he’d met earlier at the motel.

Gabriella? he mumbled like a love-drunk teenager.

That’s right, she said and scrunched up her nose. So, what can I get you guys? Lemme guess, some of our world-famous, delicious apple pie.

A smoke, Trey said flatly and stood up.

    Ezra smiled apologetically.

Trey glided toward the door, his hand groping at his jacket for the Rhode Island killing sticks. On the table by door was a half-eaten piece of pie. Trey paused, looked around, shrugged,
