A Christmas Bear
The doctor turned to Mrs. Brown with an dark, ashen look on his face. The man hated this part of his job. Thankfully it did not happen too often, but that did not help today, right now. As for Mrs. Brown, his words fell on deaf ears. It was all that she could do to keep from fainting. Her husband, Jake, held her as best he could, trying to keep his own balance. The room was spinning ever so slightly, even for him. One of them had to hold on. So. Mr. Brown listened closely.
The man in the white coat continued on for a while about the tests they had done on Michael. None of them were conclusive. None of them had helped as yet to understand what was going on. They were talking about some experimental things, but that was only a maybe
answer. Mr. Brown wanted to ask what that even meant, then thought better of it. At the end of the grand speech, the fact was they still did not know why Michael was even sick.
Mr. and Mrs. Brown had waited vigilantly next to their sons bed for some kind of answer. They had walked the halls of the corridor outside his room. They had paced up and down together and separately, taking turns as guardians. Patiently for nearly ten days, watching as people of power came and went. Some hovered over their son and discussed things, others just wrote things down. Tests and more tests that led no where. The big white waiting room of St Mark’s Hospital, was cold. Not because it was meant to be. The fact that being sick is just a sad, cold business at times. The couple had hardly ate or slept since they had come to this place. It was every parents' worst nightmare. Their only child was dying. Right in front of their eyes. The doctors couldn't even tell them why? He had just grown steadily weaker with each days passing.
It was in both of their minds. It just wasn’t fair!
They did not have to say it out loud. They could see it clearly in each others eyes. Helplessly, they floundered.
Mr. Brown suddenly couldn't contain himself anymore. We are taking Michael home! You said yourself, you can't do anything. Well if my son is going to die, it won't be here, in this place
holding back tears that threatened to engulf him. I am taking my family home.
Mr. Brown, please understand, he is better off here. We may yet find the problem.
The doctor protested.
No! We are taking him home.
Mrs. Brown stated evenly. The doctor did not reply. Her look was so fierce, the man knew nothing would stop either of them. The reality was that if the hospital's best doctors had any answer at all they would act on it. The doctors', had nothing. Watching and waiting for the boy to die, while making the family as comfortable as possible was the limit. There was nothing else.
Two hours later, after swimming an ocean of red tape, they were on their way home. The huge white hospital building grew smaller as the car pulled away from the curb, out the parking lot and down the street. The weather had turned bad over the last few days. The highway was particularly dangerous this night, with ice and traffic. Mr. Brown drove in silence the whole way. His sweet wife in the back seat, cradled their son close. She hummed Michael's favorite children's song very low and soft as the miles passed. Sometimes she would stop suddenly and then start again after a long pause. Mr. Brown was afraid to know why. He just drove on, starring at the lights and the cars on the road ahead. It was the most in control he had felt since he could remember. The hard surface of the wheel in his hands and the power of
