Jasmine Lace

Wife. Mother of two. Educator and sometimes language student. Traveler. Rum drinker. Proudly sings off-key. Jasmine enjoys going down memory lane with her musicology collection of Motown, 90's R&B, Hip Hop, NeoSoul and some old school rock. She loves being a film geek and weekend foodie. As a child, Jasmine would create fictional dramas with her Barbie dolls, giving her brother's G.I. Joes the leading male roles. Now every free moment Jasmine has is spent lost in a story that reflects the American not many write about. The backdrop to her stories are similar to the multicultural world she was raised in California. She is a versatile writer who enjoys writing quirky romances with characters of questionable morals and strong black female protagonist. When asked to describe her work, Jasmine simply said: "My writing is inspired by my experiences. Good or bad, I have to thank everyone who has been in my life to give me those stories to tell".

    Chapter One

A piece of bacon got stuck in Mya Basset’s windpipe. She bent over and coughed. The salty, hickory taste scratched her throat as she gasped for air. Chris Foley handed her a glass of orange juice. As Mya quickly drank down the cold liquid between breaths, Chris patted her gently on the back.

Are yoou okay? his handsome face was scrunched in deep concern.

Mya hung her head. She caught sight of her brown thighs exposed from the pulled back burgundy  bedsheets.

Am I still naked? She thought.

The last memory she had was of her falling asleep in Chris’s arms after their third round of sex. Mya hadn’t been wearing anything then.

She grabbed hold of her chest. The feeling of a cotton shirt covering the top half of her body gave her a little relief. But only a little.

Her breathing began to ease while her anger rose. She raised a hand near his face and pushed it away.

No, I’m not fuckin’ okay, she finally spoke when her choking fit had passed. Where have you taken me?

Chris stood up to his full 6’ 2" height. He folded his  hands on top of his blond hair.  The plain dark blue t-shirt he was wearing lightly clung to his large biceps and cut pecks. Mya was too angry to be distracted by the tan skin of his flat stomach which appeared over his jeans while his arms were raised.

Chris searched for the right words as he looked across the bed towards the black, closed curtains of his bedroom window. He opened his mouth to explain when Mya leapt from the bed. She ran to the window and pulled back the curtains.

The sun shined brightly overhead. Maples, breeches and willow trees could be seen in the short distance with a few patches of leaves that had started to turn orange. A sign that fall was just beginning.

Under the shaded thick arrangement of trees laid a group of brown and white, beef cattle. In front of them, a lawn of emerald green grass stood. It looked like a normal ranch you would see in Arkansas or some other landlocked farming state in the US.

Mya was confused by why Chris would tell her she was in Australia when it clearly looked like they were somewhere closer to home. Then, she took a step back when she saw something small and grey was hopping across the field. A black and white speckled dog with brown spots was chasing after what looked like a kangaroo.

Fucking Australia! she turned back to Chris. Her dark brown eyes opened wide in shock. How? What? Why?

When she was done going through the major question words, she leaned her back against the window in disbelief.

Well, the othah night I kinda put crushed up sleeping pills in your watah, he softly admitted.

Mya opened her mouth but no sound would come out. She couldn’t belief her ears.

Chris rushed his words. I got to thinkin’ that we needed some time tagetha so I got us on Susan’s private jet. A lot had happened and...

Movie star, Susan Dunee’s jet, Mya thought. The same jet that took us to Florence, Alabama when Chris had drunkenly passed out? The jet he used to fly to Hawaii to get me away from Mike Chang?

Wait, how did I get through customs!?! she stopped him.

Oh, you had your passport, Chris said.

Mya mentally cursed Mike for telling her to pack her passport when he had invited her for a trip away. He had made her believe she was going somewhere outside of the US.

    Fuckin’ lying men, she thought.

Chris continued, And the people at the airport all knew I was in films so...

So, they let you take a drugged woman out of the US into this country. I guess you guys don’t have Homeland Security out here. Or is it okay to kidnap people when your rich and famous!?! she screamed.

    He moved towards her.

Mya held up her hands and shook her head in panic, not wanting to be touched by this psycho.

Hey, hey, he put up his hands and slowed his steps.

His blue eyes flashed uneasiness and fear as if he was  trying to calm down an uncaged lioness.

It's gonna be okay. We're at my Granddad’s ranch in Hallston. Just takin’ a little vacation. Think of it as a break.

You’re not making any sense, Mya said.

A chill ran down her body. She instinctively grabbed on to the bottom rim of the oversized white shirt she was wearing. It barely covered the tops of her thick, brown thighs. She felt vulnerable and confused.

Where are my clothes? She tried to stretch the shirt down lower.

Your bags are here, Chris pointed to a chair in the corner of the room. I dressed yoou in that because I thought it might be more comfortable to sleep in.

You dressed me when I was unconscious? Mya asked.

A creepy vision of him putting underwear and a shirt on her like she was a life size sex doll sprung to her mind. She shook off the thought, afraid to think of what else might have happened when she was asleep.

    Oh, fuck, she cried out.

Mya covered her face with her hands when Chris got near her. He wrapped her in his strong arms. Then, he rubbed his hands up and down her back.

Mya had too many questions and emotions inside her to think clearly about what he was doing. His rubbing felt nice and calming to her, like old times. Out of habit, she let him comfort her.

We can stay here for a while and forget about LA. And just...just be.

Mya lifted her hands from her face. She looked into his striking, blue eyes and saw that he was serious.

You are psycho. You kidnapped me, she said.

He stepped away from her. His face filled with hurt anger.

So, how is this different from when yoou drugged me and put me on a plane to Alabama? He fired back.

Your ass did that yourself! You didn’t need any help from me when you passed out on your beach patio! she yelled. Besides, Alabama was a 5-hour trip across country, not a 20-hour journey across an ocean!

Now, you're just bein’ pedantic, he said, folding his arms.

Look, I need to get back to LA. I have clients and meetings and.... and... omigod, my family.

I’ve called your Mabel. She knows you're here, Chris offhandedly said. She said for yoou to pick her up  somethin’ nice.

    Bullshit!

I have to get out of here, she thought. I’m in a strange place. The only person I know forced me here.

Mya frantically thought about her options. She didn’t trust he would do something harmful if she persisted in rejecting him but she didn’t entirely trust that he wouldn’t.

Men change all the time, she thought. They play nice until they get what they want.

Kyle Ross, Mya’s old boss and abusive ex-lover, had been so nice and sweet to Mya in the beginning. Then, after a few months, he started hitting her during his sick sex  rapist fantasies. When Mya had called their relationship quits, Kyle had turned mean.

Scenes from the movies Enough and Sleeping with the Enemy flashed through Mya’s mind.

What if, Chris is one of those guys who play a good game but then bang cuts you up and puts you in a freeze if you reject them?

Well, I’m not about to find out, she thought.

Mya looked around for a weapon. She remembered the clear vase filled with seashells that stood on the opposite side of the bed.

She silently moved over to sit on that area of the bed. Mya placed her hands to shield her eyes as though she was crying.

Yoou can call her, Chris quietly said. He walked over to his dresser drawer. I have a satellite phone here. Yoou ....

Mya slammed the vase of shells over his head. She raced out the door as the glass shattered onto the floor.

    Chapter Two

Barefoot and unaware of her surroundings, Mya ran down a hallway entombed in window glass. She pried open one of the windows and jumped onto a wooden porch of dark brown wood. Plants aligned the cream-colored house walls. A white railing in greenish blue trim fenced in the area.

Mya! she heard Chris wailing from inside the house.

Mya’s heart raced as she looked around for stairs to widen her distance from Chris. She feared what he would do to her after she had smashed the glass over his head.

The front of the house had a dirt road leading off the property. Mya was sure that if she could make it to the main road, she could flag down someone for help.

Mya! Come back! his yells got closer.

Mya had always felt so safe with Chris, but this. This made her fear what he was capable of doing. He was stronger than her. He could overpower her and make her do whatever he wanted. That real threat scared her. And Mya had no intention to see what other crazy ideas he had planned for her.

She rushed down the porch. Mya yelped and jumped in the air when she saw that she was about to step on a reddish-brown beetle the size of a post it. Its six prickly legs scraped over the dark wood floor as it crawled along her path. Gross, she thought. Mya tried not to think of the crunchy sound and gushy ooze the bug’s body would have made if she had stepped on it with her bare feet.

Mya quickly decided that there was only one thing to do. Mya clasped a hand over the railing and leaped over it. She bent her knees and fell into the grass. Adrenaline pumped in her ears, blocking out the fanatic calls from Chris.

Mya headed for the dirt driveway. Her feet landed on the hard, tiny rocks of the sandy path. It was a strong contrast from the soft grass she had previously landed on. The soles of her feet hurt from the cuts made by sharp, large pebbles that she ran over. But pure adrenaline kept her going.

Wait, Mya! she heard Chris closing in on her.

Damn, he’s fast, she pushed away that thought and kept going. Mya refused to look back. That’s how people get got in horror films, she reminded herself. They look back then trip on some rock or branch. And before they can get up to run again, they get killed by the person who was chasing them. Nay uh-uh, not today. Keep focus on the goal.

She was almost to the main road. Mya sped up with the last
