About this ebook

Her home town of Belfast Northern Ireland was occupied by the British Army at the time of the troubles, troubles Margot Giligan was well aware of as the day arrived for her to leave the confines of her local all girls Catholic school on the outskirts of her beloved Belfast, she had up until that day been under the watchful eyes of the nuns that ran the school and leaving was somewhat daunting!.
It so happened that a kindly lady called Mary Mcginty a local hat shop owner was looking for someone to help run her shop and although it was to be only fifty pounds per week Margot was overjoyed at the prospect of not only working for her but being able to contribute towards her keep at home since her father who worked for the local distillery (of all places) was on short time and spent most of his days getting drunk and abusing her mother.
This is the story of a love that blossoms through all adversity when Margot meets and falls in love with a married British army officer, only to be left alone and pregnant when he gets killed by a bomb. The loos of her lover and finding herself pregnant Margot finds solace from Mrs Mcginty who takes her under her wing since she herself is unmarried and does not have any children of her own. The meaning of S.W.A.L.K. becomes clear when her mother explains "they are words many servicemen used to put on the back of their envelopes when posting home to wives or lovers".

I do not write one specific area, infact my books are mostly diverse for instance. A Bolt From The Blue is historical fiction woven around a true story.A story that has mostly been erased through the sands of time . Un coup de bleu L'explosion de Halifax Available at penitpublications.com A Bolt From The Blue-The Halifax Explosion . The bells ring out in Halifax Nova Scotia Canada each and every year on December 6th at 9am to remind folks of the tragedy that happened in 1917 when two ammunition ships collided in the Harbour of Halifax and Dartmouth. A tragedy that took almost 2,000 lives. Kinmel Revisited is another of historical fiction woven once again around the fascinating story of the Kinmel Camp Riot in 1919 in North Wales. This book is also available at penitpublications or blazingheartpublishing.com The Black and White House is a on the edge nail biting thriller that will leave readers maybe thirsting for more of the same as Joshua Jenks a poor coloured boy from Memphis goes on to defy the odds by becoming a Senator and this is where his troubles begin!. At this stage I would like to introduce adult readers to my series of adult fictional crime. I say adult simply because each book contains explicit references suitable for adults. I have four books in the series and the first is now on Smashwords entitled Hell Bent on Murder, followed by Hell Bent on Revenge and if this has wetted your appetite then to come shortly is Hell Bent on Corruption followed by Hell Bent on Blackmail, all featuring ex met cop turned private eye Jim Bent. SYNOPSIS.

Margot Giligan had spent almost all of her schooldays at a local Catholic girls school under the ever watchful eyes of the Nuns and had developed into a young lady her family should have been proud of, but it was not her family she turned too in times of trouble, it was a kindly older lady called Mrs Mcginty who happened to own a ladies hat shop called Mcginty’s Milliners in the middle of her home town of Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Since it was almost time for Margot to venture out into the world as a young working girl it came as no surprise to the nuns or indeed her friends when she was offered employment in Mrs Mcgintys shop.Fifty pounds a week is all I can afford young lady! Mrs Mcginty said as Margot got excited at the prospect of becoming a shop assistant, and earning a wage that might help her to buy the little things a young girl needs .And with a father who spent most of his time drunk the money would help.

Margot had been born into an Ireland that was in conflict with the British, so it had become a daily routine to see soldiers in and around her home town. Still only sixteen and with the looks of a film star she became attracted to an English army officer who died shortly after they had met, leaving Margot in a state of bewilderment and shock, shock as she realised she was infact pregnant from the first love of her life?. At first Margot found it hard to understand how she was pregnant and secondly why indeed it should happen to her?. With her mind confused and a feeling of loneliness she turns to the one person she feels she can talk too, the one person who had taken her under her wing, Mrs Mcginty.

Margot finds it hard to tell her mother about her pregnancy until upon her return home one evening her mother hands her a letter from John her lover. As Margot shakily takes the letter she notices on the reverse of the envelope the words S.W.A.L.K. that would be sealed with a loving kiss sweetheart! Her mother said as the tears ran down her face and Margot began to slowly open the letter knowing despite her terrible loss she must face up to the future with a son or daughter without a father!.To sum up this short synopsis may I say this is a story of a lo that blossoms through all adversity, and although she will never forget her first love she must be strong for the baby despite her sad loss.

    CHAPTER 1

Romance was the last thing on Margot’s mind as she hastily washed and dressed for her first day of employment after many years under the watchful eyes of the Nuns at St Patrick’s school for girls on the outskirts of Belfast, Northern Ireland. Stealthily she crept by her younger sisters Mary’s bed making every attempt not to awake her since she had not slept well that night after she had heard her mother and father shouting at each other. Margot’s father was on short time at the local distillery and with little money he was unable to get to his usual nightly drinking session, so life was becoming unbearable until Margot offered to help with the bills. The rain became heavy as Margot boarded the number seven bus that was to take her to her first day of work. As she began to wonder about her life the window on the bus became misty so she wiped a small circle to be able to see out at the rain.

Suddenly the seat next to her became occupied by a large man with a smokers cough and body odour that began drifting in Margot’s direction. As the bus continued Margot turned her head towards the window and reached in her bag for a tissue in an attempt to avoid his increasing odour and his constant cough. The bus finally came to a halt and the large man almost fell out of his seat as another smell came from his open mouth, and this one Margot recognised as Guinness since her father drank only guinness night after night.

The rain had finally stopped as Margot made her way through the busy streets towards the shop, only pausing once to admire herself in a shop window!.Good morning Margot The kindly voice of Mrs Mcginty asked as she greeted Margot with a broad smile. As it seems very quiet I wonder if you could open the new models for me in the back of the shop,? she gestured as Margot replied ,of course Mam. Mrs Mcginty replied now then Margot its Mary and your first job is to make us a nice cup of tea please?.

After tea Margot continued to open the new hat boxes until Mary suddenly said , have to go to the bank my love so you are in charge of the shop until I return is that ok?. Margot realised she had been given responsibility of the shop on her very first day and this gave her a sense of responsibility.

Mrs Mcginty returned the new hat arrivals. The day passed pretty quickly as Margot glanced up to the clock on the wall and realised it was Five Thirty and the rain outside was ever-increasing Mary also looked at the clock and said When you have finished Margot put the closed sign on the door as you leave please! Margot knew the next bus was at five forty so she hurriedly put her coat on and put the hood over her head as she ran for the shelter of the bus stop.

Upon her arrival home Margot was greeted by her mother Mary who asked if she had a good first day ,to which Margot replied Yes mother Mary was pleased with me I think? Mary is I know her mother replied as her father complained that Mary her sister was playing her music too loud. Jesus Christ full of bloody Mary’s? he commented as Margot ignored him and began eating.

Mrs Mcginty had gone to the back of the shop whilst Margot began on the window display. As she proceeded to place the hats on the models she felt someone was looking at her through the window, someone who was dressed in a uniform and was infact staring not at the hats but at Margot herself?. Finally she realised her mouth was wide open and the hat she was tending too had fallen on the floor.

As he entered the shop Margot could not fail to notice he was infact a British army officer. Can can I help you Sir? Margot said as she realised she had said the words can twice. Removing his hat he replied, "Looking for a hat for my ageing mother as its
