    Perhaps denial is my heads way of defending my heart from the countless blows it can no longer manage. Or, maybe, the refusal is evidence of sheer stupidity. Whichever it is, all I can think in this moment, as one hand grips a shovel, and the other rattles the door latch, is, this is it. The moment I have been waiting for... run! My shoulders sink to the ground. I know I’m not going to run. I have nowhere to go or anyone to turn to.

    I walk outside and breathe in the fresh air, I lean over the water barrel to gag and vomit. The smell of manure is getting to me something fierce. The morning dew drips off the blades of grass as I stroll over it barefooted. I hum a melody and head towards my favorite place in Boont County.
