About this ebook
Stephen Longstreet has been charged with a task: find out who's been borrowing his Uncle Anthony's greatest invention, a time machine, without permission. He never expects the miscreant to be a lovely, red-haired woman, or that in apprehending her one dark night he'll fall into the contraption and travel through time with her. But once he's met Bridgetta Maguire and discovered her powerful mission, his heart refuses to let him turn away.
Bridgetta isn't sure how or why the time machine she stumbled upon in a yard in Warsaw, Poland works. She just knows that in a desperate moment she flipped the dials and whipped through time to the workshop where she met Stephen. She can't let Stephen, or her attraction to him, deter her from using the time machine again. Precious young lives are at stake, and to the mothers of Warsaw, Bridgetta represents the sole hope of saving their children.
Fleeing the Nazis, with Stephen badly injured and the time machine damaged, Stephen, Bridgetta and their charges are flung back and forward through time. Is there a way to repair the time machine and win a future together, even though they were born so many years apart?

W ake up!
A hard slap against Stephen’s cheek accompanied the words in staccato. He opened his eyes to see a halo of copper-red, backed by the sun, and the pieces of reality swam back into his head.
You’re the thief. The woman who stole my uncle’s time machine.
She said nothing. Stephen couldn’t see her face with the sun behind her. But the crown of red curls fingered her unmistakably.
Where are we?
He struggled to sit up and she backed off a bit. "When are we?"
I didn’t steal the machine.
She had a light voice, cultured with a touch of an Irish accent. I found it and borrowed it.
Found it? A likely story. Where?
Right here as a matter of fact. Soon after, it became my only possible escape route and I used it as such. Blame me for that if you will.
You couldn’t have found it here. It’s never been out of my uncle’s workroom.
That’s where you’re wrong, Mr....
Longstreet. Stephen Longstreet.
My name is Bridgetta Maguire and I’m in the most desperate situation. I’m sure, Mr. Longstreet, you’ll be wanting to help me once I tell you all.
CHAPTER ONE
London, England, September 1882
What is the significance of those red hairs you found?
Stephen Longstreet asked his uncle as he peered into the clockwork mechanism of the time machine. For once, the fog had cleared from London’s skies and the clear morning light slanting into the large high-ceilinged room illuminated the scene far better than a hundred gas lamps.
I’m not entirely certain,
Anthony Gregory admitted. The man cut an odd figure as he hurried about the chamber in his rumpled coat, tie askew and brown hair mostly on end. But more than once when I discovered the machine in this condition—it having been used I mean—I’ve found at least one strand left behind.
Ah.
Stephen eyed his uncle unhappily. To say Anthony became distracted easily would be an understatement. Yet the pure genius of his mind frequently left Stephen amazed. This place—Anthony’s workshop nestled at the top of a warehouse just south of the Thames—lay littered with brilliant inventions that, once built, rarely saw the light of day.
Like the time machine in question. Though Anthony had perfected it months ago, he’d as yet refrained from allowing it a trial run. Now it seemed someone had been using it without Anthony’s knowledge or permission.
Stephen’s heart sank. He’d hoped to be the first to operate the machine. Damn it, he
