MOST KNOW THE TALE OF Medusa—the woman turned gorgon by the vengeful goddess Athena. How one of the most beautiful women in all of Greece became a creature so vile she turned anyone unfortunate enough to meet her to stone.
However, what if you were told only a version of the story? A distorted variation spun to strike fear into the hearts of even the bravest of men? An outright lie?
It has been said there are two sides to every tale: good versus evil. Heroes against villains. Light and darkness. However, there are actually three voices to any tale. The parties involved will happily tell you their dramatic adaption of what they perceived to happen. Their acts of bravery when faced with danger. Even their reasoning of why they acted the way they did, how they were forced into circumstance.
However, the third side of the story is the one rarely ever looked upon.
That version is the truth, what truly happened. The untold story that goes unseen and unheard by most.
Medusa’s tale is not of a vengeful goddess who turned on her faithful follower. It’s not of a beautiful woman who seduced a god. Nor is it of a beast who enjoyed turning people to stone. It’s a tale of a young girl who underwent horrible circumstances, and her journey to overcome them. It’s a story of learning to see the good in a situation, when it appears there is no hope. It’s embracing who you are and loving yourself.
Let me tell you the magical story of Medusa.
MEDUSA WAS A BEAUTIFUL CREATURE from the moment she was born. The daughter of a family of means in the Greek city of Larissa, it was expected she would marry well and further her family name.
As a child, she was paraded about at all the grand events her parents, Phorcys and Ceto, could get an invitation to. Her mother and father bartered and planned, trying to find the best family match. It was common practice to use children as bargaining chips, but when it came to Medusa, her parents were on top.
As the years went on, Medusa grew from a beautiful girl to a gorgeous young woman. She became tall and slender with a
