About this ebook
Imagine you’re on a road trip somewhere in the middle of nowhere – no towns for miles, it’s nighttime, and there is no cell service. Suddenly, your GPS fails. You didn’t print out directions. All you have in your glove compartment is a map and a compass. What would you do?
Captain Robert R. Singleton explains the not-so-complicated science of simple navigation. Starting from the absolute basics, “You’ll Never Get Lost Again” can teach even the most directionally-challenged how to find their way to any destination with little more than a compass, a map, and a sense of adventure.
This book uses simple, easy-to-understand instructions, real-life exercises, detailed diagrams, and straightforward explanations to guide any beginner to a better understanding of basic navigation while also reminding the advanced navigator of the importance of simple concepts in an important science.
By the time you’ve finished “You’ll Never Get Lost Again”, you’ll have the confidence to know that, as long as you understand the basics, you can find your way to any destination in the world – from the grocery store around the block to the far reaches of the great-untamed wilderness.
The world is yours for the navigating.

Foreword
You’ll Never Get Lost Again: Simple Navigation for Everyone,
was first published several decades ago, sometime after Columbus but before all the new scientific technology came about.
Today with orbiting satellites, GPS-global positioning systems, tracking software, and heaven knows what else, it would seem the old methods of navigation should have been dismissed as relics of the Stone Age long ago. However, dear Reader, believe me, they are not. While most people rely on the accuracy, speed, and ease of use that the new systems afford them, they lose sight of the basic science and pure accuracy of how to get from one place to another.
Now, here’s the rub: what happens when the satellites fail or the transmitters fall silent? This is when common sense, a small magnetic compass, and perhaps a map become the basic tools of the trade. Learning how to use these items will give you knowledge and confidence in an adverse situation. This information may very well save your, or some else’s, life one day.

Dedication
To Napoleon Bonaparte, Emperor of France
I dedicate this work to the great Corsican for the reason made apparent in the following short story. I have no way of knowing whether the story is true or not, but the idea it expresses is what is important.
Marshal Ney, the great firebrand of France, paced back and forth before his Emperor’s desk. Napoleon seemed unimpressed by his first Marshal’s nervous and upset condition. Please hear me,
Ney pleaded.
