About this ebook

Subtitle: Evidence of Plato’s Lost Island Empire

What if a scientist refused to look at evidence, afraid of the ridicule he knew would be coming his way? Sadly, too much of this happens even today, with “climate change,” the Clovis First dogma and other topics where vested interests provoke hostility instead of open debate.

According to ancient Greek philosopher, Plato, a great island empire was swallowed whole by the sea about 9600 BC. And wouldn’t you know it? We have evidence from 3 different scientific disciplines that point to a major catastrophe 9620 BC.

The facts which tend to support the Atlantis story are numerous and rich with details. And science should never stoop to logical fallacies to dismiss any topic out of hand.

This book provides empirical evidence which strongly supports the past reality of Atlantis. It also provides a geologically-based hypothesis for the initial formation and later destruction of this legendary island. It also gives us empirical evidence to back up the hypothesis. In addition, this book peers into the murky waters of myth and finds a way to add clarity to the stories that have come down to us.

Not only do we find an alternate story of the Atlantis myth, but we discover evidence that the latter days of the legendary island empire may have been matriarchal. Such a startling fact may explain the modern Basque couvade, the hate Romans and Greeks had for the Etruscans and even the behavior of Medea of the Jason and Argonauts myth.

Proof of Atlantis? We know what proof would look like and we know that proof against Atlantis is virtually nonexistent, yet the ridicule persists. Science run by ego and logical fallacies is not a pretty sight. This book contains evidence from a broad range of fields, including geology, physical anthropology, cultural anthropology, genetics, blood biology, linguistics, oceanography and even climate science.

This book sets the stage for a larger work—Mission: Atlantis—currently in preparation after two decades of research and more than half a century of significant interest. This book also points the way forward in what needs to be done to achieve the holy grail of Atlantis academics—Proof of Atlantis.

    Proof of Atlantis?

Evidence of Plato’s Lost Island Empire

    Rod Martin, Jr.

Dedicated to R. Cedric Leonard for all the many long conversations on this fascinating topic.

Those who choose not to look will miss out on the great discoveries.

"Though I was satisfied that I was on the verge of perhaps a magnificent find, probably one of the missing tombs that I had been seeking for many years, I was much puzzled by the smallness of the opening in comparison with those of other royal tombs in the valley"—Howard Carter, upon his discovery of King Tut’s tomb, Diary, November 5, 1922.

from Chapter 1: Proof of an Atlantis-Like Event?

Scientists have used ice cores drilled from the ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica to explore the details of Earth’s past. Several chemical markers act as proxies for temperature and other factors from Earth’s climatic and volcanic past.

From the GISP2 project in Greenland, ice cores tell us that 9620.77 BC there was a relatively major volcanic event which left its debris on the face of Greenland at that time. This date is a veritable bullseye with the Atlantis event mentioned by Plato. Comparing more modern events, we can estimate that the volcanic trace in Greenland for that ancient date was from a VEI (volcanic explosivity index) of 5 (similar to Mount St. Helens, 1980), if the eruption was in the Atlantic, or a VEI 7 (similar to Mt. Tambora, 1815, which gave us a year without a summer), if on the other side of the world.

    Introduction: In Search of Evidence

I love science. How all the building blocks of existence fit together remains a fascinating treat for the mind. As a software engineer, I can appreciate the way the various aspects of nature act like subroutines in a running software program. Each aspect of nature follows certain proscribed patterns of behavior that can be observed to repeat in a never ending series of effects to their corresponding causes. I’ve studied a great many sciences over the last 60+ years, including astronomy, chemistry, physics, astrophysics, mathematics, geology, archaeology, oceanography, climatology, anthropology, planetary physics, planetary habitability and others. Yes, I love science.

But some scientists, and especially some self-proclaimed skeptics, destroy the notion of science and scientific inquiry. There is a better paradigm for science (see Appendix, Notes).

This perversion of logic has corrupted virtually every branch of science in one manner or another. I’m certain some scientists will find this hard to believe, but the evidence is overwhelming. Bestselling author, James Glieck, in his book, Chaos: Making a New Science, warned us all about this penchant for logical fallacies. He wrote, To some the difficulty of communicating the new ideas and the ferocious resistance from traditional quarters showed how revolutionary the new science was. Shallow ideas can be assimilated; ideas that require people to reorganize their picture of the world provoke hostility.

Such egoistic behavior leads to an unthinking barrier to inquiry and discovery. Some topics become taboo or are too easily ridiculed, because everybody knows... something. But those with the ridicule hardly ever nail down exactly what it is that everyone supposedly knows. The few who are cornered long enough to offer a reason, frequently say something that is paper thin and easily refuted, but they don’t stay around long enough to receive their just lashes. Too many dismissals are based on appeals to the stone and other forms of sloppy thinking.

For many years, one oft heard reason that the story of Atlantis is only myth and nothing more, is that there is no evidence of a civilization that far back in time. In actual fact, this reason is only a logical fallacy, because a lack of evidence never disproves a thesis. Those who use this claim are making an argument from ignorance—a form of muddy thinking that is quite common. Since we don’t know everything, we have to remain humble to the possibility that evidence could one day be found. And, surprise! Evidence has been found. In the mid-1990s, ruins were discovered at Göbekli Tepe, Turkey that have since been dated to 9500 BC—only one century after the date given us by Plato.

Taken by themselves, the Turkish ruins do not prove Atlantis. In fact, they may not be related to Atlantis at all. What this example shows, however, is that this one argument against the past existence of Atlantis—that there’s no evidence of civilization existing that far back in time—was horribly wrong. We now have evidence of a civilization only one century after the supposed demise of Atlantis, and more than sixty centuries before our own
