    Asphalt Kings - Terri Lane

    Asphalt Kings

    Chapter One

The cab pulled up in front of the red brick house guarded by a white picket fence that looked to be in serious need of a painting. The house had seen finer days. Had once been filled with the laughter of children, and had once smelled of fresh baked cookies, but now it just stood quietly and still, almost deathly so. Tamicka stepped out of the cab, she was home.

It had been more than 16 years since Tamicka had left home for the big city, leaving the small town of Dixie, Texas without so much as a backward glance, in search of what the outside world held for her. She had never thought she would have to return, had never thought for a second that she would not succeed in her desired field. But now, here she stood, washed up Tamicka, a failure in the one thing she had dedicated all her life to doing. The fact that she could think of herself like that, spoke of the heavy blow her self-esteem had taken when the modelling agency she had been signed to for years had dropped her 2 years ago because she wasn't bringing in any billable clients. Tamicka hadn't blamed them, she knew that for a long time they had kept her on only because of the relationship she had come to develop with them, and she had come to accept the fact that her modeling days were over when she hadn't been able to get another contract.

Tamicka was a proud girl, she had learned at a young age to hide her hurt from the world and fake her smile. Fake it till you make it was her slogan and she had spent the bulk of her life faking it so much that she didn't know anymore which part of her was real and which part was fake.

That would be 50 dollars, Ma'am, The Uber driver said. Tamicka threw a sunny smile his way as she gave him the money. She noted his long stunned look before he seemed to regain himself and collect the money from her. She was used to getting reactions like this from people. The driver himself, even though he had been an absolute angel throughout the trip, had been casting extra-long looks her way time and again.

Have a nice day Bob. She smiled as she stepped out. He did the same and went to the boot to bring out her luggage. She was rolling her suitcase towards the wooden front door when the door flew open and out walked a woman with a mass of long gray hair...

Tammy! her mother shouted. It's about darn time, I was beginning to worry. Her mom was 5'5", had once had blonde hair and had the most beautiful green eyes Tamicka had ever seen on anyone. Growing up, the kids had teased her about her mom being so different from her that she had gotten in so many fights until she had learned to laugh it off.

I’m alright Momma, my flight got delayed. Tamicka’s answering smile was infectious. Her mother reached her and gave her a big warm hug.

Oh, how I have missed you, dear. There was real joy in her voice when she spoke. Welcome home, her mother said. She had always been her biggest supporter in anything and everything she had done, she had encouraged her to be the best she could be, to put in her absolute best in everything she did. That was why coming back home had been so difficult, she felt like she had
