PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION

A Reflection on Healing

This book was first written in 2001. At that time, the world was reeling in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. The book contained many references to the events of that terrible day, as much of its content was inspired by a need to heal from the spiritual and emotional wounds caused by those events.

In the years since those events, much has changed in the world. When I think back on those events, they seem paradoxically near and far away from me. They seem to remain dominant in my mind as a monumental event, yet the original sting, while still present, has begun to fade. I think this is probably a sentiment common to many who observed the events of that day, except perhaps for those who lost ones near to them, who must inevitably feel the loss more sharply and continuously than the rest of us. As the site of the World Trade Center is now being transformed into a memorial of rushing waterfalls and majestic oak trees, those events can now be transformed into something more beautiful in our hearts as well. I hope this second edition also stands as a monument to where we have been and how far we have come in the intervening years.

I am an ardent believer that everything in life, for better or for worse, is a blessing. Ultimately, I believe that those events, as difficult as they were, were also a blessing. Darkness must exist to give form and meaning to the light. In the end, these events are all part of the great push and pull of creation and destruction that give rise to life and to growth. From the close-up, microscopic view of those events, they seem incomprehensibly tragic. But from a distance, one can feel the shift in awareness that has occurred in the years that have passed.

In this book, I speak lovingly of Mago, Mother Earth. We are not only her dependent children, but her progeny as well. We possess her same drive to create, to nurture, and to give rise to life. Mago Garden, the Sedona, Arizona, retreat and training center that you will read about, exists as a place to nurture this healing life force that exists in every person.

Of course, it is our choice to use our creative potential or to ignore it. In fact, we are free to choose the opposite, to choose a life of destruction and hate. If you spend too much time watching the evening news, you might think that a lot of people are choosing the later. But this is not really true at all. Just look around you. You’ll see that the great majority of people want to live positive, productive lives during their time on the planet. If the average person is to be blamed for anything, it is that they have simply failed to recognize their own power and potential to create a truly beautiful world.

I believe that part of the purpose of human life is creation. Destruction requires no conscious choice at all; it is built right into the system of the universe. Take your own body as an example of that. If you want to build your muscles to create a stronger body, you will have to work at it persistently. If you want to get flabby and weak, it will take no effort at all.

And if we choose it, great creative potential can be born out of destruction. In fact, there is some element of destruction in all creativity—the sculptor must chip away the marble to get at the form underneath and the painter must grind down the pigments into a fine dust. For every destructive act, there can be a push toward creation.

I mentioned 9/11 many times in the original version because it provided the spark of inspiration that ultimately changed many lives. Sadly, it may occasionally require a shocking event of this magnitude to bring us back to our highest selves and to feel the urgency to act. It was in response to these events that we created Dahn Healer School at Mago Garden.

When I developed the first draft of Mago’s Dream in 2001, hardly anyone was coming to Mago Garden. The casita rooms were often empty and cold. Since that time, the number of living quarters has doubled, and yet that still is often not enough to house everyone who would like to stay. The place is now abuzz with activity. People are coming from all over the world to commune with Mago, to learn how to heal others, and in the process to heal themselves. There have been many changes—new training halls, a beautiful healing garden, an organic vegetable garden, a new welcome house, and much more.

The most important thing, however, is not the number of buildings or even the number of people visiting. Rather, it is people’s willingness to become one with and to honor the spirit of Mago Earth. Without that, Mago Garden is little more than a vacation retreat. In 2009, a new statue will be erected in honor of Mago, and it will serve as a reminder to all who visit of their own creative potential and their connection to Mother Earth. It is only through our connection to Earth that we can find the proper balance between creation and destruction, a balance that will bring bounty to all without the traps of overconsumption and greed. It is the balance that Mago demonstrates to us at every moment in her perfectly orchestrated ecology. When we find harmony with that, we will find harmony with each other.

Really, I would like to think of this second edition as a middle edition of the book. As I have indicated, much has changed since the first publication. Yet we are still in the middle of the story. People are indeed waking up to the great potential they hold inside. Let’s plan a third edition of this book that tells the story of how you and I and the rest of humanity learned to walk hand-in-hand with Mago Earth to become the manifestation of her most precious dream.

Feeling the Earth at

Sedona Mago Garden

I am standing in Sedona Mago Garden, about two hours north of Phoenix, Arizona. This breathtakingly beautiful land not only has given me countless hours of indescribable appreciation for the Earth’s beauty but also has inspired me to feel more deeply the meanings of Earth and Earth-Human. Standing here, one can feel the reality of our Earth as it rushes into our minds and souls.

Sedona is a traditionally sacred land of the Native American people in this part of the world and has been prophesied to become a center of the coming age by bringing people together in the spirit of peace and reconciliation. Citizens of this beautiful region often speak of Sedona as a place that will herald the coming of a new civilization, where a worldwide spiritual-cultural movement will find its grandest flowering.

From my first encounter with what is now Sedona Mago Garden, I have felt joy and hope alternating with dark doubts and anxieties that accurately mirror my history with this piece of heaven on Earth. I first came to the United States in 1993 to introduce Dahn Yoga and Brain Education. These holistic exercises, designed to improve physical, mental, and spiritual health by using the flow of ki, or life energy, are already a huge success in South Korea.

The first thing I did after arriving in America was to buy a used car. I then drove from New York City to Los Angeles and back again. I even stopped in several Canadian cities, including Vancouver and Toronto. Although I had the goal of observing and becoming accustomed to the geography and everyday culture of North America, I was also scanning the terrain for a uniquely spiritual land. In South
